Hey guys,
Have any of you guys ever had this happen, For the last 3 hunting seasons I have had no problem finding deer, I have had a problem finding deer I can shoot:mad:
I have no problems finding doe, and its getting frustrating lol. The bucks have to be around if the doe's are right???

Ev

Like with humans the Bucks are smarter and don't show themselves as easily, time your hunt with the rut though and like humans, bucks get kinda stupid chasing does. I'm sure that I see 10 does for every buck during hunting season or otherwise, hang in there!

Until the rut starts, you're better off avoiding the does yourself. Do the opposite of what you are doing now. Big bucks avoid the women and kids like a righand avoids tupperware parties. Look for marginal portions of your area where a grumpy old guy would go to be by himself, or with the guys. You won't see many deer, but you might want the one you do see.

Around here you have to check the does out really good as some of the bucks have pretty tiny horns.

The result of what? 30 years of buck only hunting. I wonder if they'll ever change the rules so that the mature big bucks aren't exclusively culled? Talk about weakening the gene pool.

The only thing I find to be true in this is.......
Bucks get kinda stupid (like humans) chasing does....

Oh, I don't think we have to worry about that, how often do we see a monster out of season or on the game cam and never shows up??

The big boys are out there breeding, we just don't see them first hand.

Not so much in the Laurentians in Quebec. Given time, Sask. will be the same if the buck only laws aren't changed.

Our numbers here are good and will likely stay so.

We are fortunate to have a system that has worked so far.

Antlerless tag, and either ### tag and you are good to go, some areas you can get more depending on numbers in that area. You can hunt for meat then be picky with the bucks.

Saskatchewan will never be like Quebec.

You need three things to "improve the buck quality" in an area. One is good food. For the most part hunters have no control about that.

The second thing you need is to leave the good bucks in the gene pool. Shoot the inferior bucks (not just the younger ones) to prevent them from breeding and passing on the weak genes.

The third is a proper buck to doe ratio. If there are too many does, the inferior bucks will get to breed too. If there is good competition for the does, the superior bucks breed a higher percentage of available does. That means, shooting does should be part of herd management.

Guys who continually "hold out" for the biggest bucks they can find in any season, or who refuse to harvest does, are probably hurting the quality of the "average" buck in that area.
