Do I Really Need A .300 Win Mag?

I haven't hunted moose where more than 300 yards was even an option. I think you'll have more than adequate horsepower with with the 30-06.

I carried a 300 Win Mag exclusively for 12 season starting in 1991.

There was never a game animal I took that I couldn't have taken with a 30-06,...and most of them I could have taken with a 308 Win,..some with a 30-30.

It's a 308 on steroids......under 400 yards you'd never know the difference...other than a bit less bullet drop.

Come hunt with me in the Boreal areas of Alberta. I've been hunting all week and I've been presented with shots well over 300 yards dozens of times on deer and moose.

That said, the two I've harvested so far were both shot with a 270 130gr Trophy Bonded Tip with great results.

I still think he needs one...........and I'm not taking it back. But , that said, I also spent the last 2 hours loading up ammo for my 25-06 for tomorrow. I think every gun cache needs a .300wm. I also have a .338wm which I love, and a 444 marlin and a 45-70. Just keep buying more than you sell/trade. All have applications. You may end up shooting a 30-06 more, but when you want the "roids" , the gun is there. Plus, I reload, and the 300 is different when you can tailor it with your own recipes and bullets.

And now I just found a Stainless Savage 116 in .338 win mag for $530.

Damn I want one, but damn those are some expensive rounds.

yes, even with reloading- you only get 100 rounds per POUND with the 338, your bullets are literally twice as much( they come in 50 round boxes, but cost the same as 100 30's) -in short, it's a VERY expensive rifle in my books- on the other hand, it's shooting a 250 grain bullet at the same velocity as your 308/180, and that means it can CRUSH BONES - think of it as an 06 plus about 1/3- you also pay on the other end in recoil( roughly about 30 pounds vs 17 for the 06)- i only use mine for long range shots at heavy game - and then if i'm afoot, not horseback- it's NOT a bring-a- long gun so much as a SPECIALIST'S TOOL with a defined purpose ;the savage 99 with 308/180s is my bring along, whatever gun

I have 2 300 WIN mag because... but i mainly shoot my MR-1, 308 and my Creedmoor, seem that when you getting older the added pounds to the 300 WM recoil hurt more.... JP.

I think a heavier recoil and more expensive ammo makes you a better shot. You learn to need just one. Nothing worse than an elk hunter with a semi auto 30-06 and lots of boolits.

But seriously, I think you already had your mind made up when asking the question. If recoil and cost are an issue stick with what you have and what you know and your deep freeze will appreciate it

That being said, my gun of choice here is the 338wm for everything. Added a 300 rum now which I'll use for deer in Nov.
