Fiberglass or wood usgi stock?

it depends on the stock- do you want a chunky with a lot of wood, or do you want a CAT-SUIT on your m14- i prefer the cat-suit; finer forearm, lighter in all porportions, and still has a nice impressed checkering - by comparison, the one on my chinese is thick through the wrist, heavy and clunky- if you like chunky, go wood- if you prefer finesse, go fiberglas- but don't forget the popsicle mod if you go usgi in either case
When I was searching for stocks for mine, I found a pretty good deal on a USGI birch stock and am quite happy with it. However, I would have seen no problem if I`d have found a deal on a USGI fibreglass stock instead - they`re both good in my opinion.
The USGI fiberglass was a big improvement over my polytech synthetic stock .Narrower in the forestock and grip with slight checkering on it .
It also came with the rubber buttpad which is another improvement as well .
Also the fiberglass ones you can paint if you wish pretty easily .
I did this to mine...check out the maple leaf ..
I like the look of the wood as well so I feel it is personal choice and budget and availability .

Nice looking GI woody by the way gnmontey !! I think they look great with the wooden hanguard .

The USGI fibreglass I believe is skinner than the walnut, or at least the Boyd's. I have small hands, like asian girl, so I went with the fibreglass stock.
It was a huge improvement over the 2007 chu wood, but I'm not certain if it's more accurate yet. My rifle has been a work in progress since August 2009 and I've really only been able to shoot a few rounds down the pipe. All of them were pretty much before I started the work. I hope that I'll be able to get it out next year, the only thing that needs doing now is a muzzle brake that doesn't touch the bullets and scope rings shorter than 1 inch. I also understand that the USGI fibreglass stock gives you a bedding job? Some gunsmith told me that, so I figured that I should repeat that as truth on the internets.

i don't know about that,so much as that it , being fiberglas , isn't going to compress like wood over time,and you violate the bedding EVERY TIME you clean it- i know some folks that have bedded fiberglas stocks( these are the guys in competition) and only pull the stocks once or twice a year, and then re-bed ( and that means excavating the old bedding, and replace it with new) but as to an actual bedding job ( like devcon) in the fiberglas stock, i just don't buy it

I don't have an M-14 clone anymore, but I had two stocks for my rifle, one was a USGI birch wood stock with the stamps. It was for nostalgia dress up. The other was a USGI fiberglass which I bought for $40 ten years ago. The thing I liked about that stock was how it could be modded with camo paint, cheek riser and could be used in the field for hunting trips. I took my Norc hunting and it killed two black bears. If you haven't taken an M-14 out hunting, you are missing a big part of the picture. They're a very cool rifle.

Fred's no longer has USGI fiberglass stocks..............his stockpile has run out. Fred was the best source.........
Fred has stated that he may come across a few fiberglass stock from time to time when he is cleaning out the warehouse...........
The days of cheap and plentiful USGI fiberglass stocks are gone......
If you want to squeeze the maximum accuracy out of your M14, you will want to bed even a fiberglass stock. The bedding will lock the receiver into the fiberglass stock and and improve accuracy and consistency.
Regarding glass/steel bedding.........
The AMTU armorers will pull the actions from the bedded stocks at the end of every competition season and rebuild/re-bed the actions during the off season.
These rifles are bedded so well that most of the time the rifles have to go into a freezer for a period of time and then have the receiver gently tapped out.
If the receiver easily comes out of a bedded stock then the bedding job is too loose and needs to be re-done.
The bedded actions do not get removed from the stock during the shooting season. The only time the action would be removed is if there is an issue with the rifle or certain parts need to be replace/repaired.

The first is a clone of the usgi fiberglass as far as action inlet and external dimension goes. These are as light as a usgi glass stock, but are much stronger and far more rigid. Pricing and availlability to be announced.
Second is basically the same but is a "user finish" stock. In that you transfer your stock ferrule and steel liner. This one is aimed at those "do it yerselfers" who want a slightly more affordable, quality stock, that they can fit to suit their needs. Again, pricing and availlability is to be announced.
Both these stocks come with rubber recoil pad installed (removeable)

G.i. Stock
Reading some of the US forums and from my own experience the fiberglass is better, tighter fit no swelling from humidity issues and tightens up your groups. Switched my Springfield M1A to a G.I fiberglass and did notice a definite improvement in group size.g2.

Great news Doc , I was hoping you would come out with just that style of USGI stock as I like the dimensions and feel of mine .
I dont want to bed it as its my hunting version.
I have a question though , I already have a USGI fiberglass on one of mine and to change it to your stock would I have to come up with a steel liner if I wanted to do it myself? As my USGI doesnt have a steel liner just the ferrule .
