Hi,

I've got a 260 Rem in Savage 12 LRP for my father. He was supposed to hunt deer with it, but now he is looking to try it for moose. Shot would be max 300 yards.

What you guys think? Would it be enough?

Thanks again!

Shot a bull moose last year with mine. Did the job but I felt under gunned as the "perfect shot" did not present itself. The moose died quickly and humanely but defiantly not like when I hit one with my 30-06 or 300wsm. It took several quick shots to down him. But it worked.

I agree that there is better choice (and I have a 6.5x55 and 2 .260 Rem) but if you want to use it, my bullet choice would be the Barnes 130gr TSX. Somebody posted recently about their moose hunt where it was shot with a .260 Rem and a 120gr TTSX. They had complete penetration and a very dead moose.

With a proper bullet, I wouldn't hesitate to use my 260rem on moose, out to 300 yards or so. I would however, be more selective of my shot choices than with some other cartridges.

The ballistics calculator give at 300yards 1491 Lbs for a 308 with 150gn Accubond VS 1387 Lbs for the 260Rem and 130gn Accubond. Not a big difference... but the .260 have a better SD.

Thanks

it wouldn't be my first choice, but if it's what I had, I'd use it. I'd load it up with an appropriate bullet (such as the 130 tsx noted), and not feel too under gunned.

SD is just a function of bullet diameter to weight. All it means is that you have a long, thin bullet. If going for moose with a .308, use a heavier 180gr bullet. It gets the same ft/lbs of energy at 300yds as the 150gr, but will penetrate better. You also want to take into account that the wound channel for the .308 will be larger than the .260. It definitely can be done, just like .223 on deer... but make sure your father is aware of the limitations of the cartridge, and picks his shots accordingly.

260 is no different than a 6.5x55 ....... lots of moose have fallen to the old swedish round .

using a barnes bullet just makes it better .

i haven't run into that elusive bullet proof moose yet ........ and you can always take a second shot .. :)

NOW if your trying to stop a charging moose , hell bent on stomping you to death .... that is another story .... i'll take the bigest rifle i can pick up with 2 hands please .

Like Servo said. the Swede has been used on moose for a hundred years. My brother got a big moose loaded with the Hornady 160gr RN bullet. It was found, expanded, under the hide on the other side.

The 260 Rem has very similar ballistics. With the right bullet I would not hestitate to use it.

Know that i know the in and out of the 6.5 caliber, i would not hesitate using it on a moose, delightefull caliber... JP.

I had some 120 TTSX loaded up for my Swede for a moose. Unfortunately never saw one yet. A lot of variables in moose hunting, I am still not 100% sold, until I drop one I guess.

I would not hesitate to use a 260 with the correct bullet on Moose.
It is ballistically similar to the 6.5x55, and I have shot moose right out past 300 with the old Swede.
My choice has always been the 140 Partition, but the 130 TSX/120 TTSX would be just as good, I am sure.
Regards, Eagleye.

First Moose I ever shot was with a 44-40 ----- he didn't go anywhere except into the freezer.

Go ahead and use the 260, just make sure of your shot placement.
