264 Win Mag vs 270 Win

If you compare the 130 grain 270 @ 3100 fps to a 140 grain 264 @ 3200, both sighted in to be zeroed at 300 yards, the 264 will be only about 3" flatter at 500 and will arrive with about 400 ft lbs more energy [if that means anything]
PBR favors the 264 by some 15 yards.
If you can justify the extra powder burned, the somewhat shorter barrel life expectancy, and the higher recoil and noise levels of the 264, then it is definitely for you
If you want a chambering that has real nostalgia, then the 264 is the choice.
Otherwise, the 270 makes more sense.

Unless I missed something in another post....am I picking up here that Winchester will be chambering .264 Win. Mags in their M70 line-up? Or will you be re-barreling?

The clear answer is the .264.

You already have a very nice .260 which is essentially the same as a .270.

You would get bored of the .270 in 17 minutes or less. Probably after you shot your first group you would have buyers remorse, even if it was a one hole group.

The .264 is somewhat uncommon, it offers plenty of opportunity for you to experiment with and try new powders and bullets that weren't available back in the stone age when it was introduced and you can say "it's a .264
and be met with puzzled looks from most hunters who only know of the 300 mag and the .270. Perfect Bartell cartridge.

The .270 is....well, it's the .270. Nothing wrong with it, but really???? YAWN...

3 new models of 264's in the Winchester lineup for 2012. :)

I already have a 7mm Mag so no need to get another just yet. Ackleys aren't for me, either.

Just to stir things up a bit, have you considered the 270 Wby at all? Mine was barrelled up more than thirty years ago with a 24" Douglas barrel, gets over 3500 fps with 130s and 3200 with 150s with great case life. Tight primer pockets after five reloads in reformed W-W 7mm mag brass.

It still shoots close to an inch after 700+ rounds down the barrel. :)

The 150 gr A-Frame at 3200 is absolutely devastating on big game out to 300 yd, and believe me when I tell you the trajectory of a 130 Partition at 3500+ is very flat. Sighted in three inches high at 100, the drop at the turkey rail, 385 metes (411 yd) is less than seven inches!

Between what you want ... and what Gatehouse already knows, guess it's pretty
much which bullets & which powder ... Barnes & Retumbo worked for me in a 26 incher.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, mine liked 72 gr. of H4831 behind an 85gr Sierra ... made a pretty neat varmint round ... but not so easy on the fur ! Would generally stay under 3/4" at 200.

Go with the 264

I have a 270 (with a 6x42 Leupold BTW) and it really is extremely boring. Especially with that scope. Point, Shoot, Gut, Hang, Yawn.
But when the chips are down and there is a big buck on the line the last week of the season,, I almost always grab it out of the safe.
Just saying.

There is just something cool about a Model 70 in .264. .270 grow on trees right beside .30-06's and the cool factor just ain't there for me. 6.5 bullets with their high BC's rule too.

I've owned both. Stuck with the 270.

Lighter rifle. Shorter bbl. Less blast. Less powder. More brass. Longer bbl life. Less recoil. Same results.
