UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

If this has been answered already, my apologies, but I'm too old to slog through 1700+ "are they here yet?" posts to find out.

Has anyone fitted theirs with a regular full-length buttstock to essentially clone the M92 "baby carbine" that Winchester would make on special order?

(Gracias to www.rarewinchesters.com for the pic.)

I've had a stiffy for one of those for years and years, but I want to be sure a regular buttstock will fit and doesn't look like poo.

I did, sort of. Ordered the fiber optic front and Low adjustable rear from Steve's. Problem is... Fiber optic front that was sent is for an octagon barrel and won't clear the barrel band. Adjustable Rear though brought my POI down to approximately 0.5" high at 25m. I didn't take pics but I will next time out.

On that note. If anyone wants a free octagonal fiber-optic from for a rossi, PM me and it's yours. No takers on the EE and I can't be bothered to return it to Steve's.

can you give a link?

Thanks,

J

The pic on the site for the round barrel green fiber optic sight is what I received, but IMHO and experience it's the wrong pic. I drifted the fron sight out, tried to replace it then noticed that the reason it wouldn't tap back in was that the barrel band was interfering with it. So I replaced the original front, added the lower rear and took it to the range. I'm content enough that it'll hit where I point it at 25m and could be adjusted for longer distances if needed.

Honestly, for a $25 part it's not worth shaving metal. That and the fiber optic front is actually lower than the stock sight which won't help bring down the POI.

That's no good! These guns need the highest sights available to mankind.....:D
Is Steve going to send you the right one? He seems like a nice guy.

I'm sure if I sent the original back he might. But the shipping to Canada was something like $16. I had them shipped to family in the USA and waited for their next visit at CDN Thanksgiving. Not too keen on waiting till Christmas this time. That and I'm not sure the correct sight would be any taller. I don't recall seeing height options when I bought it. All in all though the high-viz fiber optic would be nice, but I've got a working, accurate gun for now that I plan to carry while I'm clearing bush on my land.

When I emailed Steve a few months back he said the tallest fire sight for a round barrel that he could get was .5 inch.
I thought maybe Steve screwed up your order in which case he would likely just send you the correct sight for free and not require a return.

Suppose it may be worth asking. I just assumed I had made the wrong order. All things considered I probably should have e-mailed first rather than just adding things to the shopping cart. Still, I wish this gun didn't need a .5 inch front sight. Lol

with lots of trial and error you can reduce the height of the rear sight and get a POA=POI to whatever distance you want.

I set mine to approx 25 yards by simple using a small round file in the center of the rear sight and a flat file to reduce the "horn" part of the sight down.

Lots of ammo required to get it right but otherwise it is a free fix

That's what I did as well but I will eventually get a taller front sight as I don't like how low I have to get for the sight line.
I might even mount a sight base to get it up where it should be.

Just picked up A Chiappa From Epps.Take down model ,Case hardened receiver and Octagonal Barrel.Nice piece of kit.Dave

CDNJackpot, did you put on the rear sight yourself? or did you get a gunsmith to do it? if you did it yourself is it easy to do?

Thanks,

J

Did it myself. It was pretty simple. Just need an appropriate size puch and a mallet. It drifts out pretty easy but the replacement sight was a really tight fit going back in. Also worth noting, I wrapped a thin piece of fabric around the barrel to keep from getting scratched as the sight was sliding back in.

I'll post a pic of the end result tonight at some point.

Cool thanks, I just ordered the same sight, but since I left all of my tools in calgary I might have to suck it up and get er done by a smith out here. Ugh a man is nothing without his tools...

Well depends on where your nearest Wal-mart is, but any big box store would have a punch/mallet, and a very flexible return policy ;)

Rossi vs Henry

Hey guys I don't really have the time to read through 170+ posts, I was just wondering how the rossi's have been performing WRT reliability. I want to know if the Henry mare's leg rifle is more or less reliable than the rossi, and therefore worth the extra money! i know about the POA vs POI issues, I just don't want a dud that'll fall apart after minimal use.Thk

any good/bad experiences or advice would be cool thanks
