cheapest 30-06 or 308 rifle

I'd rather buy a good used rifle than some new piece of crap. For $400-$500 you can find a nice used Winchester or older Remington that will be twice the gun. If you want to spend less there are some nice BSA's, Huskvarna's or Mauser 98's that come up from time to time. Just sayin'.

New inexpensive Marlins are tremendous value and you know they have been treated right when it is brand new. FS

About 5 years ago I bought a 770 in 300winmag off the shelf at a local hunting shop, package deal scope. Very cheap. I never had a problem with it, accurate as I can be. I would pick one up again in a caliber I desired if I was still really in to hunting. But traded it+Cash for a pistol and now all my fun are with restricted toys. I've herd alot of people having problems with a 770 but I loved mine, so I figure anytime I see some one bash it, its gotta have some one their to stick up for it too.

Marlin?

I'll say right up front, I apologize for sounding just a weeee bit skeptical about the Marlins that everyone's happy to recommend. My 1895 purchase was a nightmare, and a short browse thru the forums would suggest others have had similar experiences... Are the Marlin bolt guns subjected to the same QC as their levers?...are they being made at a different factory? I'm not trying to disuade the OP, just curious as to why there's so much love for one and not for the other.....
Myself, It's been suggested already but I'd be looking at the new Zastava's that Trade-Ex has

For an entry level rifle that won't see much use/abuse, there's nothing wrong with a savage axis. I've got one in .223. Something to play with and for the odd coyote. No need to drop a fortune when it may not be used much.
I've been borrowing a friend's remington 700 .308 the last few years for deer season. I don't mind it, but only put a few rounds through it a year, to practice at the range, make sure it's still sighted in and then 1 round to fill my deer tag. Took a nice buck tue morning with my 1 round.

I have bought seven of the Marlin X7 rifles since they became available. Have given some away for gifts, sold a couple, and still have two.

Every one of them has been everything a new rifle should be: feed, fire, extract and eject without a hitch.

As well, not one of them has shot poorer than 1 1/2 MOA right out of the box: no tuning of any kind, including bedding or trigger adjustments. All of them have done better with handloads.

The only one I have tuned up a bit shot this group,

All that was involved with it was a small trigger adjustment. This 270 has never shot a group over an inch, IIRC. I am going to buy another one in 243 for hunting coyotes and wolves.

I'm glad there's at least one type of Marlin that's making people happy.....

Savage Axis... i have one in .25-06 and my dad has one in .308, I like my 25-06 so much, I'm buying another in either .30-06 or .308.

I paid 309 for mine.

looking for a new rifle in 30-06 or 308 but i just want somthing cheap

I'd get the Savage FCXP 11 in 308, they're $429.00 and come with a scope. I was handling one the other day, and it was pretty good for the price. The long action versions were longer and heavier, they really didn't point or carry naturally like the 308 and the bolt was stiffer.

My 0.02:

I went with Savage FCXP3 (package with Simmons scope) in 30-06 - scope is ... hmmm... I use it to look at targets while shooting handgun.
Slapped Nikon ProStaff 3-9/40 BDC on it and (thou had to replace bases) it shoots 3 consequtive rounds into a dime at 100m with factory 165gr Win SoftPoint ammo.

Rifle isn't pretty to look at, factory recoil pad is stiffer than hockey pack, if one shoots 20rds in a row - arrange some massage sessions in advance.

Marlin XL7 is MOST DEF a rifle to have a very good look at.

Note to all Savage Axis/Edge owners (from a former Axis owner); don't ever, I mean never, take your gun apart to see how it was designed, manufactured, or assembled. Yes they shoot well, but having looked beneath that cheap chintzy veneer you will have the uncontrollable urge to recycle the thing immediately. The end. ;)

Took mine apart to massage the trigger a little... shoots even better and i haven't recycled it yet. Granted, it is a disposable rifle, not something you'll hand down to your grandchildren but it is what it is...

Maybe you could explain to the rest of us what it was that you saw that made you want to recycle???
