Hey folks!

I am looking for some opinions here...

Unfortunately due to the narrow mindedness of our governments I am unable to legally acquire (and shoot) an FN (which I would dearly love to do!!). I got into this after they had been but on prohib status.

I have a chance to purchase one at a decent price but I would have to get it deactivated to legally own it.

As much as I would hate to do this to such a thing of beauty it is the only way I can get one! Would I be a total @$$hole to do this or is it worth it to keep this piece of history from eventually ending up in a scrap heap?

You are turning into scrap if you deactivate one. It's just pretty scrap.

Please look for one that is already dewat, don't butcher another just to have one. This is something we need to address soon or a great many pieces of history will become nothing but scrap metal.

Well, I _have_ a FAL [specifically an L1A1] and I'd rather not have it than deactivate it.

There is a [very small] chance that these rifles might someday be taken off the prohib list...after all they are functionally identical to unrestricted M14s...and I'd feel pretty bad if I had destroyed a working gun just for fondling purposes. I say....don't do it. Instead, write your MP about the irrationality of the prohib list and hope for better days.

There are plenty of deactivated rifles around. I'm sure most are probably just sitting about collecting dust. Their owners would be easily convinced to sell, but the trick is finding the owners. Back in the early 2000s you used to see alot of prohibs (active and deactiveated) in the black and green rifle EE section of CGN. These days, not so much... they seem to have fallen out of style and memory with the RCMP's tightening of the ATTs for 12.X firearms. Start with a WTB ad in the EE. Never know what it'll turn up!

Dewating a firearm is like filling the cylinders of a cars engine with cement. Its a machine. Leave it functional or don't bother. Now if you come across a dewat then by all means pay $500-1000 for a wall hanger or a paper weight.

If it were me , I would just look for a deac . It always bothers me somehow to see any serviceable weapon slaged up . I do understand how you feel though , I own a LEGAL L1A1 and used to really enjoy shooting it , but since its been discovered that if it ever leaves my safe , crime rates will soar , livestock will spotaneously abort and old socialists will faint with fear , I cant. Sorry if I sound a little bitter and sarcastic LOL. I guess what I'm trying to say is I know how you feel , the only thing worse than not owning one , is legally owning one , and not being allowed to use it cheers

Yeah, I legally own an 8L series FN C1A2. Safe queen thanks to Bill C10A which eliminated the provision of SAPs.

I used to shoot regularly at Mons Range, Borden under the auspices of ORA/DCRA. No more.

I used to shoot regularly at Winona Range under the auspices of the OACA. No more.

I will be questioning my constituent MP about why the following condition exists:

The following firearms share common traits, viz;

Norinco M14S, Norinco M4, FN C1A2...the commonality is that...

All all magazine fed

All are air cooled

All are shoulder controlled

All shoot NATO caliber ammunition

All are gas operated

All are semi automatic

All are/were NATO Main Battle Rifles

So just why are 3 different classifications applied to these rifles?

One is unrestricted, one is restricted, the other is prohibited. Why?

even better comparison

AR-10 or SR-25, G3, M-14 and FAL

all the same caliber, rough barrel length, standard 20 round mag, designed in a similar time period, all semi auto (depending on version) and one in non-restricted, 2 are pohib, and one is restricted

I use the exact same comparison when trying to explain to people our gun laws. Most people look at me like I'm full of ####, that's how retarded things are. It makes ZERO sense, there's absolutely no reasonable justification for it. When I look at the efforts the RCMP go to classify things it puts into perspective just how far they have drifted, wasting time and resources on issues that clearly don't have any benefit.

Your other option is to buy it and put it on someone else license. But of coarse of you can keep it or store it at your place. Who knows the laws might change.
