Backstory.

Been shooting for a few years now; mostly AR's and handguns. UBER TACTICAL and at the range doing double taps and shizat. (that old story).

I want something different. I'm getting my core and I want to start hunting...

BUT I KNOW ONLY WHAT THE INTERNET TELLS ME. I have no hunter friends so there is no one I can ask.

ESSENTIALLY. I want to hunt small game (don't even know what this means. but I wanna kill em XD) to medium soft skinned game... such as dear. (whitetail? I assume thats a kind of deer.)

I've shot several rifles in my day. I've decided on two possible cartridges.

223 REM. or 7.62 X 39 (only the good stuff for both calibers. This rifles is gonna get PREMIUM.)

My mind went to the CZ 527.

Can my brothers offer any insight a poor noob?XD

Maybe start by telling us where you'll be hunting.
I'd be most inclined to recommend 7.62 Soviet, but really, it's about the equal of the old .30-30, which is a great cartridge, and has accounted for ship-loads of game; but if I was going to shoot a .30-30, I'd be looking for a used Marlin 336.

I'd suggest the Savage Precision Carbine in 308.

I have a Savage 10FPLE1A in 308, the PC is basically a slimmed down version with a proper stock for carry/hunting. I have shot many deer with my Savage and LOVE it.

A 308 is your best bet, it will do what you want and if you ever want go moose or elk or caribou you will be perfectly equipped for it... JP.

I'm looking at deer mostly.

I kinda want to be able to eat what I get (if anything the first couple of times...)

BUT BEAR DEFENSE IS ALWAYS A CONCERN. (it actually is.)

Maybe .308 would be a better option than the 7.62 sov...

I still am looking for one to hunt deer and stuff in that size with. But protecting myself is ALWAYS in the back of my head...

How about a Tikka T3 Lite Battue in .308?
Accurate, fast handling and nice to carry. Add Weaver bases or a picatinny rail and scope with QR (quick release) rings. Pop the scope for hunting the thick stuff or protection with the high visibility open sites.

My Girlfriend shoots a CZ 527 in x39r. Although it shoots groups through a dime at 100 yards, its a very light gun and would not recommend it for a grown man. Perfect rifle for a small lady or youth but under powered for a full size adult. Your money is better of spent on a traditional hunting caliber, many to choose from if you're not limited from your physical size.

Savage Scout (Model 10FCM). Barrel 20.5", overall length 39.75", weight 6.65 lbs., comes in .308 Winchester or 7.62 x 39mm, detachable magazine (capacity 4), iron sights and a foward mount for a long eye relief scope. Current production has their AccuTrigger and AccuStock. If you find you don't like the scope mounts you can get standard mounts for the Savage 10 action and put a scope in the conventional position.

If you don't like the gun it won't be hard to sell. (I'd like one, but don't need it enough to indulge myself. If you bought it on my advice and didn't like it, the guilt might be enough to make me buy it from you.)

If you don't like Savages, see post #8, that was a good answer, too.

If your main game is deer, and you'll also be shooting smaller game, with an off chance of bear defence, I think your CZ 527 in 7.62x39 is basically ideal. It's "real" bear defence cartridge, but you won't find anything that is a good small game/deer round that is. You are asking A LOT from this carbine, but I think you'd be very happy with this combo. The savage scout, or Ruger M77 in 7.62x39 would also be good choices, but I would definitely stick to the 7.62x39 as a cartridge choice.

Its true that I'd be asking alot from it; I'd also be running it pretty hard (I'm not exactly gentle. Ask my ex's ;)

but in all serious the round is capable of stopping a bear? correct?

Could look at a ruger compact as they are small carbine style rifle in a lot of calibers from 243 to 338rcm. They would be light and handy.

Which species of bear is in your area? A .308 can be a good choice, but bear defense is not analogous to bear hunting, and your choice of rifle should reflect that reality. For example, small-medium sized game is often shot at long range with the aid of a high magnification scope, but such a sight would prove difficult if not impossible to use on a large moving target 20' away. Decide what the primary job of the rifle will be, and set it up to use that way, but defensive firearms fill a specific niche and might not prove to be as useful as a general purpose rifle. You might be better with a light caliber rifle like a .243 for small game and deer and carry a pump shotgun for bear defense.

It's been asked, but I'll ask again: Where are you?

Without knowing your area there is NO way to give a suggestion.....

Deer in the boreal vs deer in the foothills vs. deer in the wheatfields are all going to require different hardware. Grizzly defence vs. Black bear vs. ploar bear.

Location please.

A 308 is obviously a great choice for a hunting rifle for the size game you want to shoot. Added the fact that there is a ton of ammunition available and it is both cheap to feed and easy to reload and you have a recipe for success. The Gunsite Scout would be a fine rifle but the detachable mag on it isn't my thing. I prefer a floorplate or blind mag, but that's personal preference. Only some serious fondling will give you an idea what fits you best and what you like.

The 7.62x39 is a fine choice though more limited in power and ammunition availability. I have a buddy that has a little Ruger stainless in x39 that would be a sweet little rifle, but realistically a 308 will be a better choice all around unless you're hot to shoot a bunch of corrosive surplus ammo for practice. Then the x39 gets a slight edge due to the cheaper surplus ammo.

I'd still buy a bolt 308 though.

How about a Remington pump in .308 , I have a model 760 Carbine (its a 30.06 though) that is one if my favorite hunting rifles .It had see through mounts and a scope before but I prefer the old red dot I put on it.Here in Ont the shots are not very far in most cases and .308 is a good cal. that is readily available and more than capable of taking big game as well..The Browning BLR is more expensive but a nice rifle as well .
