Rem 597 vs Rueger 10/22

Or $160 for a Marlin 60 that will shoot accurately and reliably right out of the box.

Can't deny the Marlin it's place in the .22 arena. Mighty fine guns. Not too sure they do much in the 'ol 597 vs 10/22 debate.

OP
Another idea is, get your hands on both and, take 'em for a test drive. You'll know what you like. You may end the debate and, change opinions...

both of the 10/22 in my locker shoot with a great deal of accuracy but then again i didn't buy the base models, I have shot the 597, had nothing bad to say about the gun, but my tastes fall under the 10/22 line

...centerfire semi automatics have the 5rd limits
Most centerfires are made to hold only 5 anyway.
Blocking a LeeEnfield mag to 5rd would be outrageous ;)
No limits on 22 or 17 rimfire rifles , bolt or semi

Welllll it isn't part of the debate but im open to trying a new gun, whats the Marlin 60 like?

Wickedly accurate and very reliable right out of the box, which makes it a fun gun. My latest one has had over 15-20 thousand rounds of all kinds through it in 3 years. No major problem to report. Like any other high volume semi, needs to be cleaned regularly. I have owned a few in last 35 years. It is not necessarily the quality of built (which is not there since Remington took over), but its timeless design.

Sadly, even a good design can not survive a management who is only interested in profits.

No one is debating...we're sharing opinions. Not really the same thing.

The Marlin model 60 outsold Ruger for decades for a very good reason! The lack of them in the EE also means something. Awesome .22's. I adore my 64's(Savage makes them now) and, sadly, saw that they aren't the best bang for a buck anymore...Marlin probably is. I parted ways with my 70HC a few years ago and, so far, it's the only rifle I've sold and, really really really miss!

I have both. My Rem is the yellow jacket mod. It will out shoot the Ruger anyday. I have a few 25 rd mags that shoot well. There seems to be lots of neg. about 597 but it is the gun my oldest son picks first. I would not hesitate to get another.

Well I got my new Remington 597 AAC--SD out to the range today and I'm super happy with it.
Fired 50 rounds each of Blazer and Federal with no issues and then shot 50 rounds of Winchester which I had 2 FTF's.
The Blazer ammo shot really accurate so I'll probably buy that in bulk.
Its a cool little rifle that i got from Lebaron's at a great price.
Now I need to get extra magazines. Does anyone know where I can buy 20-30 shot magazines and what brand to buy?
Thanks

Marlin makes a great .22 semi-auto, the 795 I think... 10 round mag fed, no aftermarket higher-cap mags available that I know of... but other than that, gun comes with a nice large profile charging handle, last shot hold-open (I wish my 10/22 had that!), a heavier barrel, and from what the forums say it's far more inherently accurate right out the box. all for $139. Not a lot of aftermarket parts to customize, but if you're looking for a dependable and accurate plinker right out of the box check it out.

As someone mentioned above, the problem with the 597 functioning is indeed the guide rail screws. My rifle was driving me nuts till I discovered that. Tried new mags and everything else I could think of. Finally pulled the action out of the stock, loosened up the two cap screws and reassembled. Runs flawlessly since then. I guess the guide rails twist when they are tightened up too much from the factory. Remington's fault, but an easy fix. FYI, my gun shoots really well with Yellow Jackets, compared to anything else I've tried.

Not owning neither a 597 or a 10/22 , I'd say if you like to tinker and add on after market parts, go for the 10/22. it's the Honda Civic of the rimfire world;)
I do own a R-55 Benchmark..the best!!!

I bought a 597mag because I wanted a 22mag semi.
The jamming probs I had were due to poor quality control.
The bolt was completely covered with machineing burrs and the guide rods were also covered with machineing rings.
All this produced "drag" which gave me light strikes and fail to feeds.
I smoothed all this out and everything is fine now...but there's no way Remington
should have let that rifle leave the factory . This changed my whole look at todays Remington products.

Bob; I respect you. you are a man of class! What you own is the Mercedes Benz of the .22 world. (....Which leaves the 597 as the Ford Escort of the rimfire world. :p)

Oh , which one is that ?
M1 Garand has the legal 8rd enbloc , is there others ?

Heres a couple > https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=99&cat=10+Round+AR+Magazines

And a breakdown on the ruling> https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopcontent.asp?type=Mag%20Ruling

Any semi, restricted or not that can use these mags have the 10rnd limit.

Okay heres the boxing day deal, bass pro, Ruger 10/22 in mossy oak on sale for 250$, which is 40 dollars off. The Rem 597 is selling for 200$ and it comes with a scope 9X32 and there is still the 25$ rem rebate. Surprised at the large price difference!

Two weeks ago I picked up my 597 from Cabelas for $160, scoped.

Anyone know where to get a VQ extractor in Canada for a 597?

Looking for one too.
