So with christmas coming my dad and I were discussing what to get my wife and kids for christmas (he always wants ideas).

After chatting for abit he says "BTW don't buy a gun for yourself this year like you usally do, I'm giving you the 243."

I barely remember what it was so i ask abit more details, since i don't think the gun has moved out of his safe in the last 10 years.

Says its a 243 Browning BLR, scope mounted, oh and i have about 200 rounds of premium rounds for you aswell!!! :eek:

Of course this is a fantastic thing, and i'm over joyed!!

Anyone got one and can give me some information on how they are like to clean, how accurate they are, ect? Most likely going to be a yote / deer gun.

And a value?

The gun is about 20 years old, mint condition as it has never moved out of the safe for more then a day of hunting 10 years ago

I have a take down model in stainless, do not know the vintage but it was made in Miroku, japan.

It is a great gun smooth functioning and as accurate as I am, whatever that means

Forget about the dollar value. Do you plan on selling it?

It is a great rifle and many shoot better than moa. The first one I shot in the early 70's did 3/4 inch with CIL ammo. Enjoy it. It does not stand up well to hot hand loads so don't so that...

Pain in the ass to clean but don't try and take it apart...
 
If you like levers, this one will make you a happy shooter.
I hope it is of the flat mag sort.
In my opinion, just nicer to look at.
The lever opens nice and easy.
Just be careful you don't bust your knuckles.
The swing is reeeeal short.
Nice once you get used to it.
And decently light as well.
Tell your pa to send me one, I'm a good guy............ :)
 
The BLR has always been a favorite of mine, I got my first deer with dads 308. Nice and light to carry, fairly short, smooth action, a great hunting rifle. You will enjoy it.
I think that one your getting in 243 would be great for one of your kids or the wife to hunt with, if there interested?
 
I don't intend on selling guys, thats half the deal with my father, is that anything that is a family pass down stays in the family.

My son's will get the gun passed to them. The 2 and a half year old already goes around the house saying "daddy lets shoot a moose", "daddy go shoot a deer", "shoot em in the butt" lol, so he will get first use

My wife has a rifle already (22lr) and doesn't have intrest in shooting anything besides that for a rifle, and she isn't a hunter, she likes the taste of moose but wouldn't shoot one.
 
I've had 3 different BLR's.... all in .308 Win. Two, the earlier model with the stick out mag, and one later one with the flush mag. All were accurate.

It would be cool to get one in .243 Win... :cool:

I hope one day my dad gives me his guns...so I can sell them to my children at a profit. Just kidding. I've always wanted a BLR .243. I've owned a BLR .308 and it was one smooth shooter. Quick, accurate, and well-built, what more can you want? I'm sure you'll love the .243. Plus there's some centimental value there.
 
i owned a 243 BLR when I hunted the Sask. prairies. A fine quality deer rifle with Nosler partitions. It carried a scope well and was deadly for three shot groups and opened a little bit for 5 shot groups due to the light barrel.

I used to pull my bolt for cleaning but it took some figuring to get it back in and timed properly. Many folks do not recommend that a guy do that in the internet age. Its a rack and pinion system and easily cleaned from the muzzle as access to the action is available with the mag removed.

I have one and absolutely love it. It is a .243 and I have taken two of my biggest deer with it! 100 grain Nosler partitions or grand slams are the all around ticket.

I had an '81 Japanese BLR in 30-06 I bought in 1992. It was a decent shooter. Kicked like a mule, but that was part of the fun.

The only complaint I had was that it was a fussy rifle when it came to magazines. I bought 4 (5 in total), and two of them were NFG and would jam consistently. The other three were perfect, no issues. That particular lever action (long action) isn't quite my cup of tea.

I too handed it to my son as a grad gift and he still shoots it. The .243 should be a rifle you will enjoy shooting for a long time.:D
