hey guys i was just woundering what the min diferences between the two rounds is? i think i might go with the 223 because of the avalibility. also what is a good choice for a gun under 550? thanks!

so little difference in the two calibers. More availability for .223 ammo. I personally have both but prefer my BSA .222 for 'Yotes. i hand load so no problem finding ammo.

And for under $600 the Savage is first choice.

I'm going to be picking up a Stevens 200 combo from SFRC. It's a hell of a deal (I haven't found a stevens 200 without scope cheaper anywhere else)

Buying ammo, get a 223. Loading your own, no way to judge - they are very similar ... pick whichever ballistics chart looks best to you use that caliber.

Cheap, but reliable NEW gun - I'd second the Savage recommendation. Solid guns, just without the bells and whistles of higher priced rifles. They are a "simple" gun - simple and efficient.

They will both kill coyotes the same under 300 yards. .223 shines a bit more after that, but not really that much. I'd go .223 over .222, more choices in guns and ammo more available.

go Stevens .223, they are $325 right now.

Your best value for a rifle under $500 will be a Savage/Stevens hands down. As others have mentioned, stay away from the cheap Remingtons. .223 is the way to go IMHO, although the .222 is still a great choice for coyotes if you reload. I have the Savage Axis in .223 & it is a great inexpensive rifle. I did find the trigger a little heavy @ 6+ lbs so I installed a lighter trigger spring & now it is around 3.5 lbs which is where I like hunting triggers to be. Good luck with your varmint hunting!

.223 has the edge over .222 in performance .
But I prefer 22.250
Savage is a great product for the money. Lots of performance value there.
Remington should be ashamed of producing such crap as the 710 and 770
IMHO

I just got a hunting book for christmas and the book says minimum for yotes is 223, so I guess that means 222 and 22-250 are outa the question f:P:

i nearly spit my beer on my keyboard! i guess then myself shooting yotes with my 22-250 is immoral? i dont think the yotes can tell the diffrence between .223,.222 and 22-250!

Go shopping for a new or used gun in .223. If you come across one in .222 that you really like and it fits you, buy that instead. Neither is wrong.
