Heya Folks,

I'm looking to put together a belt to use for IDPA and perhaps IPSC later on. Can anyone make a holster recommendation that will get me through in both sports? Oh, to compound the problem, I am also a dumb lefty...

Thanks!

Blade Tech. Even for a common gun it will likely have to be made for a left handed so it will be over $60.00. Don't think they do any production ones in lefty. A good 1 3/4" leather belt for IDPA (and IPSC), and a nice CR Speed belt specific for IPSC. For Mag Pouches, blade tek singles with finger indexing for IDPA (and IPSC too). If you want ones specific for IPSC (but are not allowed for IDPA) then the Versa Pouches are great.

The rule of thumb for IDPA is that stuff cannot be competition type gear (whereas all this is good for IPSC) and must be concealable at your sides under a jacket (so no drop holsters, canted out, and such type thing).

The thing about Blade Tech is you could buy the holster with the drop and offset and use it that way for IPSC, then remove that part for IDPA, or just get used to it with the "drop and offset" off so it is the same all the time. But at least you have the options.

ITAC are great holsters as well, but I don't think they make left handed.

Go with Safariland.

For a holster, go with Model 5186, 5187 or 5188 (same holster just different mounting); all IPSC/IDPA compliant and available in LH configuration.

For Mag pouches, Model 771 or 773; again both IPSC/IDPA compliant. You'll need 4 or 5 for IPSC and 2 for IDPA. Again, available in LH configuration.

For a belt, I'd recommend the Model 028 outer belt and Model 029 under belt. Use both for IPSC and just the outer belt for IDPA. Much better (stiffer) than the Wilderness 'Instructor' belts.

Safariland is soooooooooooooo 90's

Blade Tech, Comp-Tac or Uncle Mikes will do you for both. Pouches, same companies. Safariland is still a good choice for SS1911 mags

Touché,lol, he gets paid to use it. Safariland has been giving up market share year after year. The best indication would be the US nats survey of who is using what since the majority of the info is based on shooters who have to buy their own gear. The 771 pouch has made a comeback thanks to Single Stack Division, but when it comes to belt systems they don't match CR.

I'll 2nd the above, with the exception of some Uncle Mikes which need to be modified to be IDPA legal. Also as noted, spend money on a good belt - this is often overlooked by new shooters and it is a critical piece of equipment.

One of the 'wilderness' style belts will work for both games - the 2 piece belts are nice for IPSC but are not allowed for IDPA. Comp-Tac sells packages of holster, pouches & belt that would be a great place to start.

remember though... He is a lefty, so lets take that into consideration when making suggestions to him. The Safariland stuff is good, but if it is competition only, then it is no good for IDPA.

yOu need to look up the online Safariland catalogue...they have a strong influence and recommendation for IDPA for many of the holsters (ie: IDPA approved). A lot of the folks who carry for a living use the duty holsters (A lot). I don't even own any of their products yet, but it looks great.

That being said,..I like the bladetech DOH,..and belt holster. CR speed is the top of the food chain for belts. I only imagine the Safariland is good kit.

Lefty here and use and shoot about a dozen guns in IPSC and IDPA.
Predominantly I use Bladetech, and have some Safariland and Comp-Tac.
Unless you actually carry concealed, I'd steer clear of those holsters geared specifically for that purpose (IWB, pancake, anything with a paddle).

In these videos, Jessie Abbate wears Safariland pouches.

I like the Safariland 771 magazine pouches for IPSC, but, unfortunately - because of their open front - they aren't legal for IDPA.

For something that is legal and very competitive for both IPSC and IDPA, and is also very well-suited for general use, I'd look to both Comp-Tac and Raven Concealment.

771s are absolutely IDPA compliant. You need to review the IDPA rule book. (see photo and para E. on pg 37)

I have read the rule book, I have just reviewed the photo and text on pages 36-37, and my opinion stands.

Maybe after the "Tiger Teams" have re-written the rule book we'll all be able to come to an agreement on what all of the IDPA rules actually mean.

I do carry concealed sometimes - hoping to get something that translates from work to play! :)

I like the Blade Tech DOH - it looks nice. But can you actually wear it with the DOH feature installed for IDPA?

As far as belts go, I ordered a DAA competition belt and a few of their mag holders also. Hopefully that will get me buy for a belt and mags...
