22lr on coyotes

I know you said you don't have money for a new gun but what about $100 arsenal refurbished Mosin nagant, $150 Chinese sks, or $100 used lee enfield?

With proper shot placement and getting close enough to hit exactly where you aim a .22 is way more powerful than folks give it credit. We have put down numerous 1200# beef cattle for slaughter with it. Solids and right in the sweet spot they drop like they were hit with lightning.
That being said, my .222 stands by the door for coyotes. :)

.22 lr is perfect if your under 75 yards.

Your problem will be getting a coyote to come close enough for such a scenario to unfold.

Around here 100m is as close as I have ever seen em unless you have guys pushing bush and your blocking in the right position with enough guys.

of course you can shoot a Coyote with a .22-plenty of deer have dropped in their tracks with a .22 behind the eye.Its just not the ideal rifle for coyotes thats all,but if I was out looking for a rabbit and saw a coyote within 50 yards and I had a good rest-I wouldn't hesitate.

A .22lr on 'yotes may be good for defending farm critters or maybe a campsite , but actual hunting shouldn't be done with anything less than a .22mag and even then under 100yd.
Large game we here about taken ( poached ) by .22 are shot at a distance of a few feet , not yards... usually out of a treestand.
In some areas , such as southern Ontario , has restrictions on the caliber / shot size where using 30cal rifles and shot over #2 will only cause legal issues and also give another black eye to responsilble hunters...just what we need in todays world.
When I know that I'l be setting up in the bush I use a .22mag , but across fields it's a 6.5mm Swede Mauser...plan ahead , 'yotes are not stupid.

I found a Stevens 200 in .223 with a cheap tasco scope on the EE for around $300. Use the proper tool for the job. Like some have said, a .22LR may work at close range, but it will be tough to get a coyote into effective range. A centre fire rifle will open up your options and give you the ability to tke effective shots out to several hundred yards.

My Stevens combo new from SFRC I got today was $325 tax in

You should check your provincial hunting regulations. In BC, you can't do it.

Offence — weapons
17 (1) A person commits an offence where he hunts

(a) with a rifle using

(i) a full metal jacketed non-expanding bullet, or

(ii) a tracer, incendiary, or explosive bullet,

(b) big game, other than lynx, bobcat or wolverine, with a rifle using a rimfire cartridge,

(c) with a shotgun using a tracer or incendiary shot shell,

(d) mountain sheep, mountain goat, elk, moose, caribou, bison or grizzly bear with a shotgun,

(e) deer, black bear, cougar, coyote, lynx, bobcat, wolverine or wolf with a shotgun

(i) less than 20 gauge, or

(ii) using a shot shell loaded with shot smaller than the shot size 1 Buck,

You might want to consider an inexpensive centrefire rifle.

Very simple guidelines when it comes to shooting living things...

Use birdshot for birds.
Use varmint rounds for varmints.

If you're shooting anything larger then use something with enough energy And penetration. One without the other simply doesn't work for ensuring clean kills every time.

.22 cal centerfire for coyotes at a minimum.

MensaMan;
With respect, I believe you've misread the BC synopsis a wee bit.

I'll reference page 16 - Legal Hunting Methods and Provincial Bag Limits, section "Small Game", sub section "Other Small Game (includes Coyote)"

You will note that there that Rimfire Rifles, Centerfire Rifles and Shotguns with a sub section 1 restriction (shotgun must have a bore size of 20 gauge or larger and use shells of shot size No. 1 Buck or larger) are legal for all other small game including coyotes.

Hopefully that was useful information. All the best to you in 2012.

Regards,
Dwayne

Thank you, Dwayne. I stand corrected. I had read the legislation, rather than the synopsis, which isn't nearly as specific. Thank you for not flaming me.

22lr is not a yote gun in my opinion it would do in a pinch at closer ranges but to actively hunt for them why limit yourself?

I use 22 hornet, 223, 243. My back door gun is a 22 hornet over 20g.

Come and try to get my chickens varmint ####ers!

I picked off a marten a few weeks ago with a 20g in the chicken pen. @ 34 yards with an ounce of #4! He is at the taxidermists.
