The .375 Holland & Holland Part I

...I spined him, just behind the shoulders, and he was pissed. I’m still not sure if this means he was turning when I shot, as I honestly can’t remember anything from the split second just before “Boom.” and when I pulled the trigger, it was instinctive at that point not contemplated. I think he was just close enough the angle gave me spine as he faced me from my small platform, I believe it exited rear low. The next clear mental image of him I have was him murderously mad, scruffed up, and flashing teeth snarling when I jumped down with the .375 before he decided to beat back for the field with his front two legs. Catching up to him and following him briefly at a few yards, I shot him a couple more times as he motored back for the field dragging his back end. Finally, he died, fire in his eyes, and suddenly everything was very quiet...

Well written. I'm reminded of this scene from Tom Horn.

I'm another guy that wants a .375 H&H and just hasn't done it yet. When I do, there is a very good chance it will be a Ruger #1. I just wish that 375s were more common I would love to try a few different ones out before buying.

Thanks for posting that Ardent. Great story & well written!

Glad I finally picked up a .375 H&H (new Win. M-70). Like it a lot - although I've shot nothing but paper with it yet.

Your postings convinced me to aquire a RSM; in .416 Rigby. It's Kick-@ss as well. Emphasis on the KICK! Need to get a better recoil pad (and I'm no stranger to big bores). I'd likely want to switch it out for the .375 as well.

Rivaling them both (in weight, pointability, all-round fit/finish/'damn I like this rifle') is the Husky 1600 in 358 Norma that Trade Ex was so kind to supply me.

Didn't put any meat in the freezer with any of them this year; although a very good hunt was had.

Doesn't recoil any worse than the .375, and that's with a straight wood butt plate (no pad); although she rises a bit more (having a bit more of a drop). And from what I've read (I'm positive you can believe everything you read...especially on the www ;-) I've been led to believe the balistics are not far off the .375 H&H.

Will have to wait and see how they shake out.

Sure wish I could make it (and take them) to Africa some day!

Looking forward to your Part II.

Cheers,
Rob

Would love a No.1 International in .375 H&H.

Wonder if they would customise a .375 Tropical by cutting it to 20" and fitting full wood? Would be enough to give me some Wood!!

Unfortunate, as it's a Remington. That rifle should have spontaneously combusted at the end of construction.

Now now Ardent.... I like remington's.... especially the older models that built their reputation.... affordable and reliable.... let's not pollute your awesome thread with a jousting match on manufacturers....lol

After all, had it not been for this thread I never would have bothered even opening up that EE ad.... :)

Ruger RSM Brad, here it is beside a standard magnum long action, a .300 Win Mag Ruger Expess. Big true magnum action, not an opened up standard, it is heavy, however.

Beautiful.... I have often considered an african buffalo hunt as "the ultimate".... and was, of course, considering the 375 as the weapon of choice... I have been saving my pocket change for many years in a special account (away from the prying eyes and hands of my beloved wife and 2 kids) in order to some day buy a special rifle and have that special hunt... I was originally considering a model one but looking at the picture you posted and the sheer size of that buffalo makes me feel that having a second shot at the ready would be a much better idea.... after all, I want the last shot that goes into my buffalo to be mine and not that of my guide....lol

I've kind of stopped hunting big animals but keep putting my moose draw in every year as 999, I'm now up to priority 6.

The only big game rifle I own today is a 6.5x55 Tikka T3, while it is quite capable of killing a moose, I suspect the year I decide to hunt moose again I will pick myself up a 375, probably a Sako.

It's a great cartridge.
