500yd group with my 308

It is an impressive 3 shot group. I do not know if it is for target or hunting.

I feel that 3-shot group is sufficient for hunting. You do not need more than 2-3 shots at animals at 500 yards.

The 5-shot group is essential for target shooting.

nice shooting!
What kind of brass are you using ?? I have pressure signs at 44.7 !!
What am I missing here?
The Sierra manual shows a max load of 41.7gr of Varget for both 175 and 180gr SMK's.

The bolt starts to get sticky on my Savage 10BA with 41.5gr of Varget with 180gr SMK's in Federal brass.
My chrony shows me 2614fps with 40.1gr which is where my accuracy is best.
Sub 0.5 MOA 5 shot groups when I do my part.

This is a good topic to bring up actually because there are a lot of variables at work here. My barrel is 21.750" in length and I'm using Lapua brass. I'm definitely at the higher end of pressure and it shows on my brass but I'm still using the original 300 pcs of brass I purchased when I had the gun built for the BCRA matches a couple of years ago and I think I'm down to about 257pcs now. Every time I reload, I always cull a couple due to the bases not fitting into the shell holders but I've never trimmed the brass or bumped the shoulders back; only neck sized and reloaded. I don't turn the necks either. If someone wanted to buy this left hand right port gun off of me, I think I'd sell it. It's proven to be accurate and reliable but I want a 1:11.7 twist slightly lighter contour barrel in a Cadex Defense stock and an ATRS Indifel action so I might was well just build a whole new gun.

I needed 8.25MOA from 100yd zero to make the trip to 500yds. I'd imagine with a longer barrel, there might not have been as much drop but you guys with longer barrels might be able to reply back with results.

I dont always shoot out to 500 yards... But when I do, I shoot 3 shot groups.

LOL!!! That's Awesome!!! It really is. I'm going to save that pic. LOL

Had it been warmer out, I would have set my Iphone against a rock or something to video the target. Maybe this warm weather will stick around and I'll be able to take some video. And I'll be sure to shoot 5 shot groups next time just to please the guys that don't think it's possible.

Regarding the cold bore shot, I"ll document that too but I think that goes more to show the discipline of what condition you put your gun away in every time. I could be wrong but if others have more info on this I'd be interested in hearing it.

thats my point I think all of us should take some pics:D

5 rd groups are my comfort zone and I dont have the cash to shoot 10 so I like to do 5 rd groups at 300 400 500 then bang steal past that! I know what my rifle will do so I waste as little as i can under 300

What happens when you shoot 5?

I think your barrel heats up if you don't let it cool between shots and it F**ks up your group. I heard that bench rest shooters typically shoot three shot groups but that wasn't why I shot only three shots. I wanted more then one target to show for that particular shooting session and the sun was starting to go down. The joys of living so far away from the equator.

I'd imagine the guys that want to see 5 shot groups figure it's just luck to land three rounds close enough to consider it a good group so more might proove them right...
