Scope for a 30-06

The two ,greatest con/sales jobs ever perpetrated on the public are:
Bottled water is better for you than tap water
Variable scopes are the only way to think when buying new scopes.

If you make something and want to sell lots of them and at the same time make people replace the same make products they've been using successfully for years takes a great selling job. Emphasizing the scopes use on the bench is a start. How many of us carry a bench rest in the bush? TIe it all in with the search for the MOST accurate hand load and the job is nearly done.

For the purpose the OP stated any quality fixed power from 2.5 to 4 power is adequate.

That's my way of thinking to, all my scopes are straight power, some are 1,5x like on my Marlin 35Rem, some 2,5x like on my Win88 in 358Win and some 4x like on my Ruger77 in 308Win. Clarity, large field of view and large aye relief in this order are more important to me than scopes power. I newer desired more power than 4x even for the longest shots.... mind you I newer shot elk with 243Win from 700yds either....

Way to much power!

1.5x5 Leupy would be very nice but aren't they quite expensive?
Had a 1.5x5 Bush Elite 3200 but really didn't like that scope, I much prefer my Burris 1.5x5.

Oh. 3x is too much. What about 2.5x? He could get a a Weaver K2.5, or a Leupold FX-II 2.5x20mm Ultralight? Would that be o.k.?

Maybe mount it backwards so the target looks smaller than it is? cou:

Ok try this,
walk into your local gunshop & ask for a straight 1X or 1.5X ...very hard to find eh;)

Well he didn't say what he was hunting but at 100-300 feet, is there a better caliber if you combine deer-moose gun?

I'd say any of the .35 cals or the medium range big bore levers.I wouldn't turn my nose up at a .30-30.I guess if a .30-06 is what he already has,we'll it would suffice.I have a .30-06 and a .270 for the open stuff but when in the woods,i carry the .30/30 or .300 savage.

You're right I forgot to mention that the scope will be used for deer hunting.

I don't want to start a caliber war here but I think the 30-06 is a good all around cartridge. It is suitable for most north american big game and is found everywhere. Every caliber is suited for an application. I'm planning to start coyote hunting but I'm not gonna go using my 30-06 that would be overkill. That's why I have to buy a new gun in the near future but for now, I'll stick to deer hunting.

If it was me and i was looking for an all around deer hunting scope,it would be a 2-7.I have 2-7x32's on my Brush guns and have had them on every deer rifle i own at one time or another.

I wouldn't be scvarewd to use a 3-9 x 40... 3x is just that... 3x... So at 300 feet target will look as it would at 100 feet without the glass... At 100 feet target will look as it would at 30 feet... Sure... A wee bit crowded in the lense but easily doable...

If you look at the scopes they include in muzzy packages you will find they are mostly 3x9... So not overpowered...

You should maybe take a lok at the Vortex in Diamondback series. Very afordable, lifetime guarantee. I'm not sure of the magnification but for an /06 I would still go for a 3x9x40. Someone posted about first light and last light, so true. I had a Leupold 1x5x20 on a marlin expres .308 and hated it. Quickly changed to a VX3 2.5x8x36 as it had the greatest magnification plus largest objective lens for that style of scope. Perhaps another thing to keep in mind, not knowing your age, but, as you get older most peoples eyes tend to lose strength so a stronger scope wil last longer.
Actually just loked up Vortex in an old WSS catalogue 2-7x35 Vplex starts about $225 and a 3-9x40 $230.
I have two one bieng a Diamondback on my Ruger M7 30-06 and realy like it so I bought a Viper 3-9x40 for my .300 WM.
Just my two cents. Good luck with your purchase.

Wholesale sports right now leupold vx II 3-9x40 or 2-7x33 both on sale for 280

Right now I have 2 30-06's, one has the 2-7 (it's for sale in the EE), and the other has the 3-9. I bought the 2-7 for the shorter barreled 30 cal, but the new one has a 24" barrel so the longer scope looks better on it. I like them both, but in my opinion the 3-9 is more versatile...

Check out the Leupold VX3 2.5-8 x 36mm not a cheap scope but its well worth the money In my opinion .I was unsure when I got it for my 700 rem 30-06 but having used it now for 4 years I am convinced I could not have made a better choise.

Too much scope for what his requirements...1.5-5, or 1.75-6 in the same scope is a better choice....I would suggest heavy duplex reticle..

Original post....
I'm looking for a scope for a model 7600 30-06. I hunt at about a 100 to 300 feet.

Thanks for your time,
Seb
