Looking to build a nice little long range rifle and this is what I have come up with.
Rem 700 police ltr, harris bipod.

My problem is I dont have the slightest idea about scopes.
The rifle I own right now is an SKS and its boring.

My budget for a scope would be around 800.
Any suggestions about scopes would be great, im thinking 100 yrd to 800 (if I ever find a place to shoot it that far, but im thinking of the "LATER ON" when I get better scenario.

This will be my winter build project and prob my last toy I get to buy before my daughter is born.

PLS help

love my LTR

scope...search the EE might find a good deal!

Nothing wrong with a Bushnell Tactical, Vortex, or Sightron scope in the 6x24 power range to cover your range of usage. Make sure to get some quality rings and a 20 MOA offset base to help your scope from running out of adjustment range at longer distances.

The LTR is a fine rifle out of the box. However, you could probably "build" your own for signiciantly less money by buying a SPS Tactical (my preference would be for the AAC-SD version) and then buying an aftermarket HS Precision stock for it. You'd have the same rifle as far as features go and the added benefit of a 1:10" twist barrel.

As far as fit & finish is concerend, a LTR is no better than a heavy barrel SPS Tactical so there's nothing to be gained spending more money than required to achieve the same results.

also if your new to LR go lower on glass and get more ammo or learn to reload the money you will save on reloading will buy you much nicer glass in no time! then put the cheaper glass on a 22 trainer!

Cool thanks guys for the input! Thinking the aacsd will do the trick if I can find one!
May put the tac21 stock kit on it later!

I highly recommend Alberta Tactical Rifle for a LTR. Remington has a lot of flaws from the factory and ATR goes through there rifles and fixes the flaws with little cost added or they send them back. You never have to worry about getting a crapy mass produced rifle. My rifle was less then most dealers and slightly more < $ 20.00 if I remember then Wholesale Sports. Tunning trigger is a great first mod to have done. ATR also sells many types of scopes......prices are quite good.

Perhaps, for the benefit of all those following the thread you could list the inehirent flaws of the Remington LTR and tell us how Rick was able to supply the rifle and do all the required labour and required parts for $20 more than the regular MSRP.

I've seen some of the stock rifles listed on his site with a bedding job and a trigger adjustment. He's proud of his work, that's all I'll say.

hell if your going to mount in a chassis get a SPS Varmint chop the barrel to 20 or 18.5 " throw out the stock;) my LTR loves heavy bullets( well 175gr SMK) and shoots sub moa

Actually, please buy the LTR and I'll give you $300 for the stock, ok? Seeing how you won't be needing it anyways...:)

people make the remington sound like its a total piece a crap, which it is not. they are popular for a reason, so what a few lemons sneak passed the people, happens in every industry.

They generally good quality. Like every brand out there, there's going to be some bad examples but it's only the bad ones you seem to hear about, not the good ones.

I was politely trying to tell the guy he was full of ####. ;)

I bought my LTR from the same batch as Jamie did a few years back. l started that rifle off with a Bushnell 10X tactical and now, well it still has the same Bushnell 10X tactical on it and shoots just as good as it did when it was new. It is a great rifle you will not regret buying one.

I bought an SPS Tactical in .223 and then picked up an LTR stock off the EE a couple years ago. Had my 'smith bed it and clean up the trigger. Going that route might save a couple hundred $$ if you can live without the fluted barrel. Sports a Leupold Mark 2 (now called a Mark AR) 6-18 optic. Took a while to find the right load for it (60g VMax), but it's become my go-to varmint rifle around the farm. Lot handier to carry around than the 26" Ruger 22/250 that it replaced.

Also have Savage's take on the LTR....Model 10 Precision Carbine in .308. I like the HS stock from the LTR better than the AccuStock on the Savage, but both shoot about the same (.55-.60 MOA/5-shots). 10PC has Bushnell 6500 2.5-16 glass on it. The detachable mag on the Savage is a bonus for certain applications. Can retrofit a DM to the LTR but it's pricey. Usefulness of the Savage mags is a bit diminished now that SSS won't ship their 9-rounders to Canada anymore.

Unless you really need those extra fps that the longer barrels give you, go with the 20" carbine. They are a lot of fun to shoot.

im with ya lol, most shooters wont take responsibility for their bad habits and bad shooting either lol. throw the weapon system under the bus not the shooter lol

Did some looking today, no one has any sps tactical in 308 or the aacsd's

Thinking of just sitting this out for a while longer till stock comes into some of the shops or change caliber to .223. I dont want to buy a 1200.00 rifle just to take it apart. I like the idea of the AAC-SD but dont know who has one right now, I think ive gone through all the shops on this site looking. This is my winter build project and my first but its starting to look like a spring summer project, oh wait I will be daddy daycare till she is old enough to take up a 22

Now im thinking a .223 which in reality is prob good enough for learning and taking care of "ZOMBIES" eventually. (kidding)

Also anyone used Millet scopes? I saw one that was reasonable in price and got ok reviews

Hi 2bad4u2
The rifle was off center in the stock. If I recall it was a fiber glass issue/relation with block. Either stock or bedding block was worked on. Must have been insignificant as the cost of the rifle did not reflect the stock allignment issue. All other work done were modifications upon my request at a extra cost, i.e. trigger, bolt handle. Probably the prices you see on there web site are added to the MSRP for the custom work. First Remington rifle I bought was not from ATR and was returned. The muzzle crown was uneven……hard to explain except it looked like the machining was stopped and started part way through resulting in an uneven muzzle. I was forced to pay the shipping back to receive a refund…….originally just wanted another rifle but there was a long wait. So that was two Remington rifles with fairly significant flaws.

To OP:
Check around but at the time the prices I received from ATR for a bone stock rifle were not much more and you get a experienced eye reviewing the rifle. Having said that most good gun shops I would hope would take a look at the rifle. Just saying the Remington products in my experience have been hit and miss. Still like the action the most though. LTR's are a nice rifle. The stock is very handy.

Good to hear you're getting into the long range game, can never have enough of us. We have a rifle that might tickle your fancy. We have one left and it just took a price drop (cant remember the price sitting here in my couch). Its the 700 xcr compact tactical. I find that the finish on these is far superior to the parkerized rifles. If I can make some suggestions take them for what its worth. I personally have been competing for years and been playing with many different brands and styles and had to learn some things the hard way. Determine how you will use this rifle the MAJORITY of the time. I see lots of people build rifles around shooting astronomical distances yet shoot 100yards 99% of the time. I would hold off on the chassis system, bed a good stock and practice for years. after you put alot of shooting down range your ideas might change as mine have many many times. As for the glass, buy once cry once. Im a fan of leupold (although we sell many good brands) and believe they can fit a wide variety of budgets and we can configure to your preference. To get into long range remember, good glass not crazy magnification. my 6.5-20 mark4 gets turned down alot on hot summer days when the mirrage kicks up.

If you're ever in our area stop by and we'll do our best to answer any questions and see what we can do to set you up or drop me a pm. All the best in your venture.

P.S. congrats on the daughter, mines due in 5 weeks. can't wait to get a rifle in her hands.

Nice post. Lol.....sheesh I was just trying to point out a experince I had. Not full of s**t. To get back on topic....I would not hesitate to buy another LTR or any Remington for that matter to be clear. Point was to get one from a shop that looks at it before its sent.
