I know this may belong more in Red Rifles, but I figured there were likely more people who assess the value of historacle things here:

I know they're cheap and plentiful, but does cutting the original bolt handle off of a mosin nagant lower its historacle value in any way? I was considering buying a separate bolt body, adding a bent bolt, and transfering the guts into it, rather than cut off the original factory stamped bolt, thus being able to save said bolt in its unmodified condition.

It might seem trivial, but I feel like years from now that might be considered to 'lower its collector value'.

Am I being over-sentimental?
 
Cutting it will devalue it. End of story. Common now, maybe not down the road, and yours will be like the bubba'd enfields around these days. Buy a different bolt body.
 
Bolt bodies are cheap and available. cutting the handle off is a sure way to devalue your mosin. Buy one and keep your current one as issued.
 
To be quite honest it won't matter on these refurb rifles. Most of these although appear to be matching are actually not. The bolts have been scrubbed and re-stamped probably at arsenal refurb. If you look at some of the hastily built wartime mosins you will notice the bolt handles are stamped perfectly with just the numerical part of the serial number. However they are still my favourite rifle of all time :) .
 
As long as it was done by an official weapons refurbishment program in the USSR(former) I'd consider it matching. Like a depot or armourer rebuild on a K98. And to answer the OP, even if matched post war, have butchered the original would still affect the value in the future.
 
Now here's the next question, how does putting a PU scope hurt them? For some reason I fell the need to save the bolt body, yet drill and tapping the reciever doesn't seem so bad. Or would it be worth it to get another barreled reciever? (I have yet to find mosin recievers without attached barrels, and the process of separating the two would probably break it).

If I were you I would consider buying a mosin ex-sniper from westrifle. It is already tapped and has a turned down handle. It only costs 220.
 
If you are going to be drilling four holes in the receiver, altering the bolt handle doesn't really matter.
 
So it sounds like if I want to preserve its originality, inasmuch as arsenal refuribished mosins are, then I've got to spend the money on a new bolt body and reciever. дорогой. I wish I didn't care about history so much
 
I've got another complete bolt on the way to do just what this thread is about. Its merely to play around with. Plus it gets me spare bolt parts should the need arise.

But Numrich may not take a foreign order for it. There is government restrictions that they have to follow
