BCRA Tactical Rifle 2011/2012

we have a similar problem with booze at some of our clubs events. even though there are signs everywhere, and people have been warned, they still seem to think it's ok to break out a beer in the parking lot. Some people really are too stupid to breathe it seems

I have some objections to the current penalty system. I think it actually discourages people from taking chances to achieve better scores.

The only courses of fire that should have penalties are the ones where an unintended hit would have negative implications, such as the hostage situation, where a hit on the hostage should incur a penalty but a miss would not. Similarly, the hotel COF, where a hit on a good guy should have a penalty, but a miss should not.

Penalties on courses of fire like the 3-position or the Nut Check only encourage the competitor to take "safe" shots, thereby negating the spirit of the competition. A miss should be penalty enough, since it only effects the total high score and doesn't penalize the shooter for trying to do his best.

I also think that the pace of the match could be better; this could be done by modifying the scoring to only presenting scores at the end of the day and/or perhaps by bringing in the target pullers on sight-in day to familiarize them with the butts. This might also streamline the sight-in day by allowing f-class style indicating on the targets, which would speed up the process and help the kids understand how the butts work.

Some excellent stuff, I wish other people would chime in.

On a hostage shot there well could be serious implications in missing. What if the hostage taker decides to kill the hostage he's holding.

I agree with the other stages you mentioned though. AFAIK there will be a reduction or outright change to that but can't confirm.

Although scoring has never been particularly fast a sniper this year was abysmal. The best ever seems to have been the year we used cons and it was great. The cons took it very seriously and were quick. Unfortunately, even though there were no problems, corrections has refused the last three years we have asked.

The second best seems to have been cadets. Many cadet corps choose not to associate with firearms other than air rifles. Bad optics it seems. Of the ones that would be willing, none where available this year. We asked them all.

We pay markers based on BC minimum wage + and they are paid from pick up in chilliwack to drop off time. Adding them to the sight in is not financially feasible w/o raising the entrance fee significantly. We would have to pAy them for a full day too.

We are working to improve the speed of scoring and will be trying to implement something a farm animal can score quickly. The way it's going we may be using them next year :)

Again, I really hope more people will post their thoughts and ideas.

Not cool on people not showing up to the AGM, but also not surprising. I had no idea when it was (not even sure I renewed actually), but even in the years I was a member the information sent out regarding dates for anything was pathetic. Were it not for the efforts of people like Ed and John and those before them, I don't see how the BCRA would experience any new members.
Sorry for the hijack.

Also BCRA's website is in need of some serious attention. Last time I looked it had lots of broken links.

I think things can be sped up considerably by three things.
#1. Instead of scoring right then and there, pull the targets with the relay and target# on it and put them aside to be scored. The scoring guy can work away at them while the matches continue under the control of the butts officer. If at the end of the day scoring is not complete, grab some helpers and finish it off. Instructions can be given to the helpers right then and there and a close watch carried out over that scoring
#2.While indications are nice they are not needed in this kind of match. Its a sniper match.Your spotter should be telling you what is happening down there.
#3.Challenges for more points and hits can be eliminated if the shooters don't get the targets til the end of the day. Then if there is a challenge for either of those after looking at the targets ,you have the target in question right there and the match committie can decide yay or nay in seconds.Procedural challenges like targets falling off or wrong exposures can be dealt with on the line as per usual.

If the targets had more defined zones and less where cleaner overall they would be easier to score. Some of the targets in 2011 where difficult to spot hits on even after the fact and there was some confusion as to what some of the zones where as I recall.

I to would agree that having scores called back could be done away with to save time, just pull the targets and off to the scoring shed they go. Challenges can take place at the end of the day, many do anyway.

3 things I've been suggesting for years.

Also like Headamage says clearer scoring zones.Perhaps the easiest way to define them is to take one of each target that will be shot and clearly define the scoring zones with a jiffy marker or something bright and post them on the wall of the range shack before the matches start so that EVERYONE can see them. That way when the whinning starts you can just point to the target and say you should have looked.Perhaps even have a quick briefing right there in front of them in the morning and say these are the targets and this is how they will be scored. No doubt should leave little room for challenges.

Also the match director should go over with the scorer HOW each match will be scored so there are no surprises at the end of the day.

I did feel that some of the targets were a bit dark to accurately see the hits at longer distances BUT that is kinda the reality of it.

1) Score the targets after the match. Scoring them after each relay wastes time.

2) Do away with score challenges...........You get what you get. You don't get to challenge in real life..... ;)

Longshot, Slavex, and HeadDamage have summed things up pretty well........

Looking forward to shooting this match!!!!!

Excellent! Looks likes its going to be a good again this year. There are quite a few folks I've met up at poco that are interested first timers. Met a fella named George yesterday who interested but may not have a partner. I told him to come anyways because there are always singles looking for someone to shoot with. Really there is no excuse not to shoot this match. Who wouldn't want an attitude free weekend of shooting with an easy going bunch of like minded folks?

That's not very good. I challenged markers at the NSCC a few years ago, and won every challenge. When you know that you made the shots with a good grouping rifle, it makes you wonder about the markers. It turns out I should have made one more challenge.

If its a 3 day match this year it will be worth my while to make the trip, and I too will be needing to find a partner for the match.

I would love to attend this match. Problem is whether or not the timing will work. I've never been to this type of match and I too do not have a partner. I finally have a rifle for it not though! Time to practice.
