Rock River Arms: LAR-47 (AR-15 in 7.62×39 That Takes AK Mags)

Rock River Arms is showing off their LAR-47 rifle. It’s built on a brand new lower receiver designed to take AK-47 7.62×39 magazines and fire them in a 7.62×39 upper. Make the jump (and ignore the shoe) and I’ll lay some specs on you…

7.62×39 16 inch chrome lined heavy barrel, 1:10 twist

Billet A4 upper and billet lower
Chrome lined 7.62×39 bolt carrier group
RRA Delta Brake muzzle brake
RRA Two stage trigger
Ambidextrous AK-style magazine release
RRA Delta stock and Delta pistol grip
RRA 2-piece quad rail
7.75 lbs / 36.5 inches

The LAR-47looks and feels like a damned solid gun. If it works as well as it looks we might have a winner on our hands—especially for those looking to jump from an AK to the AR family of firearms.

Scratching my head... why not just make a normal 7.62 AR since you can get AR mags in 7.62 already? I guess they see a big market for AK guys who want to jump back n forth mag wise... but ehhh... that mag just looks wrong in that rifle.

High capacity AR 7.62x39 magazines don't work well as you can't fit a tapered round in a straight magazine (because of AR's straight magazine well) and expect great reliability.
AK magazines are heavy but incredibly solid and reliable but of their heavy steel construction and very strong steel lips.

Probably because Ak mags are cheap and plentiful. I have stacks upon stacks and no gun that takes them.

LOL, me too, I bought 20 last year new in grease, plus my others i pick up at gunshows etc Im up to around 30 or so , one can always DREAM of AKs being legal again lol, but this new rifle would suffice!

Cheap? The only ones I have managed to find in canada are running $60-70 apiece! Unless that price is your definition of cheap, please fill me in on your source :). I have an sks-d with only one mag...in serious need of more!

I Agree. Where are the Cheap AK mags here in Canada??

And really, you will never see this rifle. Where is the Lar- 308, Lar-40 etc. Never showed up. Neither will this.

Right now RRA has a sale. Tactical Rifle w/ 2 mags...free rear sight and free shipping. $1000.
Why can;t we have this here?
Reading Questars Website. It looks like every rifle is about $300 more than US msrp. So the deal above should be able to be had for $1300. i would buy that!!

What we need is someone who actually imports RRA. Not just list some stuff on their website.
Most of RRA Rifles are under $999. Where are these Rifles.?

So you Handled it and Shot it??

My suspicion is that Questar's margins on R.R. stuff isn't as good as others that her carries so there's little point in carrying the line. Mark has also complained about orders not being filled in a timely manner so that likely has something to do with it as well.

If you really want one then you could certainly import one yourself. There are several companies on this site that are willing to do so for customers.

As for the rifle itself, I think it's great for those who want a 7.62x39mm AR to use mags they already own and to enjoy cheap surplus ammo that's available. However, I do believe R.R. is a "day late and a dollar short" on this. With the .300 Blackout quickly gaining popularity and widespread market acceptance, the 7.6x2x39mm AR is basically a thing of the past and relegated to a niche market in the AR community.

They were cheap when I bought them. $20 to $30 a piece.

ummm, no if you follow the link that is what the guy doing the review said.

7.62x39's taper casing doesn't feed reliably in a AR mag, because that bit of straight section in the AR mag well, especially when you are using large capcity mags, so it makes sense to use a mag that was designed to feed the 7.62x39.

The only advantage I see to the LAR-47 is the fact that you can now use hi-cap AK curved mags in an AR platform. Traditional straight walled AR mags are only functional at 10 rounds from the research I have done.

Since we, in Canada, are limited to 10 rounds it's kind of useless without being able to use the curved hi-cap mags. The advantage isn't one here in Canada. :(

you mean 5 rd? LOL

why wouldn't it be an advantage? we have ass loads of 762x39 and im sure if the demand is there dealers would import mags, there are different mags for the AKs from every country that produced them, retail they sell as low as $10 wholesale they probably sell around $5-$7 ,Im sure dealers can sell these mags at a reasonable cost and still turn a profit, If the mags were to be imported from europe maybe cheaper?

just look at P-mags they sell from $12 to $14 in the U.S. and $18-$30 in Canada , AK mags shouldn't cost no more than $20-25 realistically even though Ive paid through the nose for mine.

No, I don't. There are 10 round mags available for the 7.62 x 39 (Check Wolverine's) for the AR pistol. As long as they are marked for pistol you can use the 10 rounders in AR rifles. BTW, that is true for the 6.8 SPC as well.

What is the advantage? I don't care if they are giving AK mags away for free. They would still have to be pinned to 5. So all you have is an appearance gun. It couldn't do, here in Canada, what it was meant to do in the US where they don't have silly mag restrictions.

Well, you can't buy crates of surplus .300 blackout. Then again, not sure I'd want to shoot surplus through an AR type rifle.

I said surplus was an advantage. What more do you want me to say?

I'm partially with you on your last comment. I wouldn't shoot corrosive surplus through any firearm that I was proud of owning. If we're talking SKS's and 858 parts guns - then have at 'er.

I'd have no problem shooting Boxer primed non-corosive surplus ammo through a Rock River AR. If it was a Colt, LMT, Noveske, KAC, or other high end AR - not so much.
