Hey CGNers,

I'm testing the waters to see if anyone would be interested in attending an SKS clinic in the GTA.

Cost would only be about $30 for 2 hours. It would be a nice opportunity to get together, meet eachother and learn something about maximizing the potential of these cost-wise semi's.

We would cover:

-feild stripping
-cleaning after shooting corrosive
-reassembly
-bayonet removal
-stock/handguard changes
-bedding the barrel and action
-Trigger improvement (smoothing and going from negative to positive engagement).
-drilling and tapping of receiver for CHOATE mount or similar

It would be a basically a hands on orientation of the rifle with theory on the above improvements.

With the price being right, I thought it could be a good opportunity for some people a little leery of doing things themselves to get some experianced advice.

after altering the sear to positive engagement, do you re-harden hammer and sear? I have always wondered if these parts are only surface hardened, and thus weakened by filing away material..
Also, how do you stand on re-installing a firing pin rebound spring, as the very first Simonov models had? Supposedly to prevent the dreaded slam fire.

I have the rebound spring, and have altered trigger to pos engagement, but not -re hardened... I am apprehensive about multiple firings peening out the surfaces, and creating a safety issue.

Ahh the joys of playing with milsurps.. :)

I got the rebound spring from Murrays gun shop in the USA, they also offer pre altered and hardened hammer and sear kits for about $80 last I checked. Just as an FYI.

... If I give away all my secrets now then what's the point of charging for them? haha

Again, I was thinking this would be a theory class on how to make the improvements, and practical class on what doesn't involve tools. Basically give you the education and confidence you need to DIY, and maybe actually DO the modifactions to a model rifle so you can see how its done from start to finish.

I don't know of a venue in the GTA that could actually accomodate several work benches that everyone can conduct the upgrades together at the same time.

What are your thoughts on this?

I live in Halifax but work out of Toronto so if I am in the area and you are gonna show me how to tap for peep sights I am, in also the trigger deal may be interesting!I am waiting on my fifth sks now so learning a bit more avout them, wouldn't be time wasted!

Venues for firearms workshops in the GTA...? as in Toronto..? lol surely you jest :)

I shoot at the Barrie gun club, close to GTA, and I believe Hungry had an m14 clinic there. Maybe there? We have a newly reno'd facility with a classroom downstairs.

Other than that.. Sharon gun club is pretty big, and close to Newmarket. I don't know what their facility can offer you.. but they are large and well established... Target Sports and Aurora gun club are also close...

I am likely forgetting many others.. so please any one else chime in here...

WOW, how do people in GTA breath on their own? Can you teach them how to wipe their own butts and tie shoelaces in the same class? Would it help if I sent crayons to GTA?

Wow. Just Wow. Maybe some people don't need to be near firearms?

Stop being so gracious fiddler.. we know youre sad you cant go, cause you cant afford the air fare...:D

There are plenty that would like to learn how to do a trigger job on their sks, and other things,..but most importantly meet with a few other cgn'ers and shoot the breeze. I could see it being a good bit of fun.
Too bad you cant come!.;):(

I just got my first sks a while ago and had to do a trigger job on it due to a negative dear engagement and I found some really helpful, step by step fixes for it, along with smoothing the trigger out online. I posted the links in another thread a couple weeks ago. It was pretty easy to find and easy to follow along as well.

Thanks I'll check it out.

... So we're going to host it at Fiddler's house.

haha just kidding, but seriously, you're not invited dude. I'm sorry.

I don't think two hours is nearly enough to cover all the basics, plus mounting a drill and tap mount, then the sear and trigger job. Two days might just do it, depending on class size.

Im sure two hours are the minimum.. we all know how two hours can become four hours if youre all having a good time learning about the things we need to know.
We may own quite a few sks's in our life time, and its a great idea to improve on their accuracy and ours.. :)

I would be interested, I finially just cleaned my SKS over the weekend. I would have never thought i would have enjoyed it so much. I want to take it apart tonight if I have time.
PS.. Any idea of location and time?
Silly question, would we bring our own SKS? I have never been to a "clinic" but it would be nice to do it at a place where we could maybe shoot them afterwards.
