One upping the 375 H&H

At least with a 416 Taylor cheaper brass is available and you have Rigby power in a smaller case............Harold

404 is way cool. Expensive ammo and brass. 416 Ruger or Taylor is apractical alternitive. 458 win in a brno/cz is a good start and cheap to shoot. When you want more recoil, and you will, rechamber to Lott and then up to 460. Hard to beat that.

If you want a 458 Lott you should go look at the Montana Rifle Co. Handles one at SHOT SHOW 2012 set up as an express, was one of the nicest handling big bores for less than $2200, great action can be had in crome moly or stainless. Go check out the website or if you need a number give me a PM, cheers Dale Z

Just took a look at their website. The Dangerous game rifle they offer definitely looks great. Any idea of what the MSRP is on those?...or is that the $2200 that you mentioned? As it stands though one of those in 460 Weatherby would be interesting to say the least.. :D

Freyr they had a 505 Gibbs set up as a stopping rifle for around $2200, my friend showed it to me with the price, as he just bought a CZ in that calibre, and was impressed with the rifle and the price was almost half of the custom CZ in 505Gibbs! Oh just found the pricing for Montana Rifles inc. for some reason do not list 458 Lott, but they had it at show in the Dangerous Game Rifle, the listed MSRP is $2399.00, but that is flexible with what I saw the guns listed for at SHOT, cheers friend Dale Z!

God that's a good price for a 505 Gibbs....almost tempting to get one....a little too tempting if you ask me... :D

Any ideas of Canadian suppliers for these rifles? I'll have to save up a bit more but I'm not in any rush as this is just to top things off with a cannon. Could be fun to hunt bison or moose with...maybe caribou? :p

Why so? Plenty of 404Js built compared to the 416 Rigby. The 404 Jeffery is the mainstay of African Game Departments. It was available to everyone, unlike the elitest Rigby that only the rich could afford. The Rigby might have the mystique, but the Jeffery has been there and done it.

My jab was at the implication that the Rigby was untried or unproven, which of course couldn't be further from the truth. The Jefferies is also a fine cartridge, no detraction on my part.

Yes, but you are an odd little fellow.

It seems I've somehow offended BUM in internet life.

Getting it home would be very easy, I'm not familiar with a Montana Rifles dealer however Prophet River could bring it in for you for a nominal fee. I've brought in my last three hard to find in Canada guns with Clay at Prophet, a specific Freedom Arms Revolver, a little single shot Holland & Holland, etc you just can't find here and for a small charge it's here in weeks. If she's what you want just place your order and Clay will sort it out from there. :) Personally, I think .505 certainly fits the bill of what it sounds like you're after; a genuine hammer of Thor. Those Montana rifles have me thinking too, those are unreal prices.

.458 Lott in a CZ550. It'd make a good camp gun too in case you need to shoot through 2 or 3 moose at a time.

Who would shoot soft points out of a 458 lott? :p

But in all seriousness I'll probably go the CZ 550 458 Lott route if I don't go for one of those Montana Rile Co. ones. More money(and importing BS) but definitely a more interesting cartridge selection(and this right here is why I asked about choices...cause someone was bound to have something different to point out :D ).

Always thought a Ruger No.1 build in .577 would be rather neat... An affordable entry into that cartridge's realm too.

I know a fellow that has a P14 enfield in .577 REWA - also known as .577-600 NE.

I suspect that would be an even more affordable route, and then you have a repeater.

To be truthful, I haven't really watched too hard as the difference was negligible, perhaps $150-200 for Clay to do it, and that includes shipping you'd pay anyway from retail. Taxes are the same as in Canada of course.

All you do is get Prophet River to email you the FFL info (US dealer that receives your gun for you, stateside), and you have the manufacturer / seller ship the firearm there. Weeks later it arrives in the mail. :)

Many years ago, I think 1992 on a hunting trip between Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge, I happened to meet a chap carrying a Ruger #1 in 600 Nitro.
He did tell me who built it, I think someone from around Dawson Creek.
Perhaps Bevan King might know if he were asked.
The fellow offered to let me shoot it and being the he-man that I am I declined. He did say that he felt comfortable with it in Grizzly country.
The cartridge itself made my 35 Whelen look pretty darn tiny...

I simply cannot imagine the recoil of a No.1 chambered for 600 NE. For example, in a 12lb rifle the recoil would be over 160 ft-lbs! A full power load - 178grs of powder launching a 900gr bullet at 2295fps gives 203 ft-lbs of recoil!

FREYER just have Claye Smiley At Prophet River import a Montana rifle in whatever calibre you wish, I would if looking for a heavy Game Rifle, but spend the $200 extra and get the NECG EXpress package they offer, not listed but talk to the guys at Montana Rifle Inc, they showed the option at SHOT 2012, cheers freind Dale Z!
