hey guys,
ive been trying to decide on what bolt action in 308 to get for a while now. i was going to get the Tikka T3 but they were always sold out of the blued, and the stainless i kept missing the sales.
now im not in a rush, but Bass pro has the Remington 700 SPS Varmint on sale for $70 off for $520. (their list is about $15 too high but the sale seems good) and i have $175 in christmas gift cards there (score!!).
ive been reading a lot of reviews, some positive, some say the stock is not great and the barrel isnt free-floating but a good action and it still shoots verry accurate.
what do you guys think?
on the remington side they had a video clip defending their guns saying that they cant duplicate any accidental discharge... i didnt think this was a issue at all, anyone here experience this or have any input on it?

should i just wait for the T3 stainless to go on sale again?(not in a rush..but the rem seems like a good deal right now)
other bolt action ive been eying is the Thompson Venture with weather guard...but no one seems to have it in stock.
i cant see myself having 2 bolt actions any time soon, so its buy 1 and use it for a while before i consider another.

are you sniper?

sorry, guess i left out what im going to be using it for.
well, i want 308 for hunting deer, and possibly moose.

it will probably see more range action than field, and ya ill be putting on a bipod.

btw - i should also say that the price isnt really a contributing factor, the Tikka stainless is obviously much more $. i would just rather get it on sale and wait than pay full price(then when i see it on sale i dont kick myself for being wasteful...). the Tikka ive shot before, it was a while ago but it was really nice, my friend has 1 ive been eying for a while.

Are you set on the 308win? There are still a few new T-3 Varmint Stainless rifles in 6.5x55 around for $800. It's a nice target round, and it will work fine on deer and moose.

ya im fairly set on the 308. im going to be doing reloading on them, and my friend also shoots 308.

is there any 2012 guns coming out i should watch for??
i did see a remington 700 varmint with a triangle barrel and a built in muzzle break, slightly upgraded stock and a few other slight differences. but the reviews on it said the barrel is probably weaker and the muzzle break didnt do much, if anything.

everyone i mention any remington to always says cant go wrong with remington.. i guess that kinda speaks for itself, good trusted name in guns. ive got a 870 that ive put 2-300 sabots through without a hiccup.

just noticed the remington barrel is 2" longer, and the gun is about 2.bs heavier...
i think the tikka has a better accuracy rating... i need to find that out too, even though im sure both guns can shoot better than i can lol

I would pick the Tikka outta the 2  I HAD a sps varmint and wasnt all that impressed. The most flimsy synthetic stock i have ever saw. The firing pin hole in the bolt face was machined too big. The edges on the top of the magazine were so sharp they actually gouged the brass which didnt make it feed real nice and there were spots on it where rust would start forming on the action if it wasnt taken apart and wiped down and oiled after every cold weather coyote hunt. Never had a trigger mishap with it though

any other bolt actions sub $900 you guys would recommend?
looks like sako makes tikka, so what sako is comparable in price and quality/specs?

i wish the Benelli MR1 came in a bigger caliber...i would already have it and wouldnt be looking at all these. im still going to get it in .223 eventually.

(maybe my thread shoulda been "help me pick a boltaction" lol)

I have a 308 Win. SPS Varmint. For the money they are very capable rifles...you just have to find the right load!

In stock form it shot 1.017" groups @ 200yds with a 180gr. Hornady BTSP, 45.1grs RL15, CCI 200 primers in Hornady brass @ C.O.L 2.805. ***That load is safe in my gun only! Reduce and work up in every other gun.*** For $135.00 and a few hours of my time I swaped the plastic stock for a Remington factory VLS stock I got thru Numrich Gun Parts. Gave the action, trigger guard/floorplate and first inch of the barrel a JB weld bedding job and relieved the remainder of the stock so the barrel has .0625 cleareance it's entire length. It now shoots 0.724" groups @ 200yds with the same load.

I suggest you get the Rem 700 SPS Varmint. Use it to gain more shooting skills and knowledge. Then get into reloading to squeeze the most out of your rifle...you'll soon realized a "cheap" 700 is hard to beat!

just did some quick math..
SPS Varmit @ bass pro on sale for $529 - $70 off (just doublechecked the flyer)
@ LeBaron $574 plus 10% member discount and $40 mail in rebate if its still running...
looks like lebaron is much cheaper again.
ill probably use my giftcards @ bass pro on some reloading equipment... i need the 308 kit and a brass cleanerr.

also, after doing a little reading the 700 tactical is the same action but a better stock, and its only $10 more.
i want to see if i can find the one with the threaded barrel @ lebaron in a few weeks when they get their shipment in. (i was there today)
Model 700™ SPS™ Tactical AAC®-SD™ is the one i think i wanta see before i make a decision....we will see if they get it in. threaded barrel is easier to add a muzzle break on.

The pic is getting tired, but still very relevant. Mine is in .223 and an awesome shooter. I got rid of the tupperware stock and replaced with a Hogue. Barrel is NOW free floating.

Buy the SPS, upgrade to a better stock. Still Cheaper and (in my own opinion only) a better shooter than a T3. Oh ya..I can compare head to head, my son bought one and it cannot shoot as good as mine with the same ammo.

i dunno i have a first gen vssf 700 in 220 swift(which is great) and I picked up a few gen 2's that had machining issues in the fluting. and to a lesser degree fit\finish while its only cosmetic how did it leave the factory? and if the appearence is that rough how was the machining that mattered? on a 1200 dollar gun no less. the dealer was kinda pissed said he couldn't send it back as it was a appearence issue not a flaw. the t-3's that i have handled all looked cats ass and have not heard any complaints about em.

That hogue stock is the one that comes factory on the tactical 700. and its only $10 more to buy it like that, so im leaning towards that (if i go with the 700), and it has a slightly shorter barrel.

I have a Sako 85 varminter with a laminate stock and a heavy barrel

Shoots like a laser

also cost $1,700.00 with out glass

You might try looking for a Sako A7

When I mounted the Hogue stock, I still had to do some trimming of the excess rubber to ensure I could get a nice thick piece of paper down to the chamber.

The tactical has a shorter barrel. Although you probably will not notice a difference, if you are picky like me, after a while you will want to stretch the accuracy of those shots. You will achieve better results with a longer barrel. I have both, and that is my experience.

When I priced out, the Tactical and the Varmint price differences were about the cost of the stock. The factory mounted stock is a little cheap (bulk, I guess). Either way, you will not go wrong, and certainly will not regret.

Do yourself a big favour and forget about the Remington. They are garbage compared to the Tika T3. Have a little patience and save up and get one. The Tika has a user adjustable trigger and a 1 inch garantee. Every one of them that I have shot or seen shoot will easily beat that.
Seems like you have to play around quite a bit to get Remingtons to shoot, bedding replacing stocks yadda yadda yadda. My T3 shot an honest 1/2 " group the first time I shot it , and that was with factory loads !

I had one in .308 with a HS Precision Stock, free floated and bedded. It would make a nice rilfe for Target shooting, and maybe ocaisional Hunting, but it is on the heavier side....depending on how far it has to be carried.
