I was thinking of ordering a KSG for 3 gun because of the high capacity. Would this factor alone make it a great shotgun for 3 gun or is there anything i'm overlooking (I have never shot 3 gun, just prepping here).
Thanks

I'd think you'd have a large advantage over others with ammo capacity and mobility.

But that loading procedure is... Somewhat non-conventional.

Your speed and maneuverability might be negated by the loading time.

I still want to get my hands on one to practice and test, but those are the obvious points that stick out in my mind as I was considering one myself :)

Before buying anything I'd suggest prepping by looking at what type of "3gun" you are going to shoot...
What division you want to shoot in and what rules are used...

If you decide to shoot any US matches you'll probably rather have a semi anyway... Unless you want to shoot one of the pump gun divisions...

Nothing stateside for me planned. I have a Benelli M4 entry model but 7 rounds total vs 15 and I think the KSG would win out after 7 rounds. I have no idea about division or how to even get into 3 gunning here in Ontario. Total Newb to the sport.

Not sure where you are located and the types of matches held in your area, but my take on this shotgun:

In general you will be asked to load your shotgun to division capacity.
In standard manual (pump shotguns) it is typically 9 total in your shotgun.
This takes away your capacity advantage as we will all start with the same number of shells in the gun.
I haven't played with the KSG, but looking at vids on how it works, I know I would be faster reloading a conventional style shotgun vs. the KSG.
Therefore overall I would be faster through a course of fire with another gun.
Reloading the KSG while on the clock would be interesting to say the least.

The only place the KSG may have a chance of being competitive would be in Open division where you can load up the full 7+7+1 in most scenarios.
But again, I have a pump that holds 11+1, and I know that I can reload it faster than I ever would the KSG, so while you may start with a 3 shell advantage, I would overtake you during the reloads.
I can put 8 shells into my shotgun in about 4.5 seconds, if not less.
There is no way I can think of to do that with the KSG

Would it be fun with the KSG, sure it would.
If you intend to be as competitive as possible, there are better choices.

What pauls says pretty much covers it...

Maybe it's because of our legislated mag limits, but..
I think too many guys are overly fixated on "capacity".

In the end it matters little how many shells your smoke pole holds if you can't reload it quickly or if you can't hit what you're shooting at..

Okay thanks my friends, I think you answered my questions fully. I now am aiming towards my 590A1 for 3 gun, 8+1 looks like all i'll need in a conventional package.

Chokes... Don't forget... Cyl. Bore will fail you.

You need chokes... :)

oh man how did shotguns get so complicated? alright time for me to do some more research....if i could only compete based on my ability to buy guns!
Thanks

johhny12gauge,
before you lose your mind trying to figure out which shotgun would be the ideal shotgun...
I'll tell you right now that there is no ideal shotgun.

some have features that help and others that hinder your ability to be competitive and win events. This differs for each person.

Do you currently have a shotgun?
If so, use that at a couple of events.
You will quickly learn what design features on your current gun help/hold you back.
Create a "wish list" of features you would like and then find the gun that has them.

Also, you will get to see what others are using and you can ask them why they have it set up the way they do.
I don't know anyone that wouldn't let you try their shotgun out and won't spend a few minutes to talk about their toys.

What works for me may not work for you.
Don't go buying a gun thinking it will magically make you competitive.

Use what you have, even if it is an over/under, and figure out what you want/need in a gun before you spend cash.

Where are you located?

Shotguns

Magazine fed shotgun will give you a decent starting capacity (8 rounds) and relatively quick reloads. There are two as far as I know - Dominion Arms Grizzly and Valtro. Grizzly is not very smooth and reliable, that leaves Valtro. Excellent shotgun in all aspects except one - there are virtually no mags to be found for it. The gun comes with one mag. Otherwise, it's a dream to shoot, if I would be as accurate and fast as it is, I'd be winning every match with mine.

Dude, you haven't even shot a match yet, run the m4. It's already one of the best, it will work for you.

Having run the m4 for a few years I would say it's adequate, but there are far better options...
The m2 is very popular...

I no longerlike the pistol grip on my m4 and a longer barrel would work better for the 3gun I shoot...

YMMV

If shooting matches in Canada....Remington 870.....Mossberg 590...Benelli Supernova...are all good platforms, all with parts a availability, and upgrada
le.
If shooting in the US.....Benelli m2....Mossberg 930...Rem 1100...would all be good platforms!

I'm in the GTA, i've had about 12 tac build shotguns so i'm familiar with various designs. I probably shouldn't have sold my Valtro it seems.....This summer i'll try whatever I have on hand and go from there-good advice.
