Trophy Hunting vs Meat/Subsistence Hunting

Interested on opinions on this, I noticed another thread that got sidetracked by this debate so let's debate this on a thread devoted to nothing else.

I am a devout trophy hunter, that does not mean that I do not use the meat or see that it is used, and I abide by all game laws.
This is not a debate about poaching, but a debate about the different motivations for going afield and legally harvesting game.

I hunt tuktu(caribou) for the meat ... fatter the better ... that being said I've yet to find my TROPHY tuktu to date ... I do know he's out there with a rack so large he can't keep his head up for long ... I will one day find and shoossst and eat him! ;) As for trophy hunting ... I wish I had the means to go around the world and hunt large game ... as I love the thrill of stalking, chasing, searching for a big'un! I think I'm going to be lucky to go cougar hunting sometime soon here in the future in Canada ... which I'll make into a rug, eat the meat and enjoy shooting one ... as the kill of any animals is part of it for me .... thrilling ... I still get giddy when I shoot a tuktu and I've shot lots ... :p I've looked for large polar bears, large muskox and large whales ... so yeah some of the animals I hunt could be trophy's ... :D

p.s. most animals I hunt/kill I eat ... however, given the opportunity I'd try different forms of hunting ... as I'm sure it would be thrilling and great at the same time ... just my opinion! ;) ;)

Negative on that last question Ciphery, it's hard enough trying to get capes and horns back meat is not a possibility. It takes months sometimes well over a year to import the capes and horns, I don't think the meat would keep. lol
But it all gets used, and you can eat whatever you want to try while you're there. Some of it is a lot better than others.
 
Listen guys, i know you Trophy hunters are good people, hell i know i could learn a lot from you folks, sometimes i get carried away, a lot of times its my ego typing when someone slams me and i have to slam back. In any event weather i understand or agree with your hobbie, i dont hold it against you, your guys are not killers per say, but adventurers and explorers. I would enjoy looking at some pics in an exotic location sometime for sure.

On another topic, i message back with Hickok45 from time to time and after being in this thread i asked him about Trophy hunting. This was his response.


"Hardly anybody really needs the meat. Hunters almost always eat what they kill, though. What they do with the carcass is their business, I guess.

Me, I'm too squeamish to kill and field dress an animal. I take the easy way out and pay others to do my killing for me so that I can just pick it up at the nice clean grocery store. :)"

Anyhow thought i would share what he said. Most of us gun guys watch hickok45s channel, he is a teacher from Tennessee, who have a tonne of experience with firearms and have an awesome Youtube channel.

We are all driven by ego to sometimes say things inappropriate. At least you have the b@lls to admit it, and thank you for that. If you lived a lot closer I'd have you trophy hunting inside 2 years guaranteed. You've got the basics now you just need a tutor.

I had a look at all the pics and it certainly brought things into a different perspective.

I have to say it looks like you have been doing this awhile and you certainly know more about hunting then me or my brother, who i thought new all, thats where i get my believes from to be honest. Im only 36 he is 52, so ya listen to your big bro.


Some very cool shots, i actually know a guy in town from South Africa that hunted a tonne of wild game overseas. He said hippo tasted like tasteless fatty pork.

If im being totally honest here, if there is one Trophy for me, it would be a big Alaskan Moose. Those things get huge up there. I dont have interest in killing bears, id rather watch them, well unless they are trying to eat me:eek:

What guns did you use to take down which animal, especially the elephant.
What do you do for a living to afford you these opportunities.
 
Hmmmm all this talk around justifiable killings is strange

Last year I killed at least 18 pigeons and 24 mag pies.

So 42 birds I did not eat nor make a trophy of

I killed 32 beavers

I killed 16 coyotes

I killed 3 porcupines

So 93 animals before the animals I killed to eat.

What is my point you might ask?

We are all animals of this planet, think your self a deity if you want but that is a lie. Once you kill a thing it is dead, whether it was killed for meat, horns / plumage or because it is a nuisance. That dead animal ceases to care. We must on this planet strive to conserve the animals we have left in the best manner we can. As long as we keep conservation in mind at all times it is truly irrelevant what the reason to kill an animal is.


There is much to love about hunting, being out in the wilderness experiencing great sights and the camaraderie of your fellow hunter but truly whether you kill for meat or trophy the thrill is in the hunt and importantly kill, welcome to the real world, stop being ashamed.

I dont think anybody is ashamed. I regret my ignorance brought this thread to where it is, while i still stick to some of what i said, I can admit that a lot of it was ego slamming back after getting slammed.

No worries I did not aim my post at you but at the many.

You admitted you hunt, therefore kill in the same way I hunt and kill.

I see this all a bit more pragmatically as I must hunt at times to preserve my animals and prevent flooding.

Hunting is killing. The kill is the point and the thrill.

When we try to deny the kill we fool ourselves into believing we are something we are not.

Keep in mind I will never condone the senseless slaughter of animals, I find that barbaric and disgusting.

Agreed, ill admit it is a rush when you find the game you want in your cross hairs.

If you spend a little more time there, I posted all the calibers and loads used for each critter, it's kinda in the middle somewhere.

I'm an electrician who struck out on his own in business 30 years ago. I have since started a couple of others, bought another and sold a couple.

I work hard and I play hard, and like most I spend about 10% more than I make.lol Always on guns or hunts or hot cars, and oh ya, the current wife, (was a trophy but not anymore) oops did I say that out loud? :eek: Laugh2

If you really want a monster Yukon/Alaska moose we can probably arrange something for you. Did you like the photos of mine, is this the class of moose you're talking?

See I knew there was a trophy hunter in there, just need to get rid of the oppressive influences and out you pop, keep that whiskey flowing and we'll have you Marco Polo hunting in no time.

You're OK GunGuy34, you were just reiterating what you've been taught all your life, and I understand that. Big bros can't be wrong, however sometimes they are misinformed or uninformed. You've now stepped out from under that influence and listened to others and opened your mind and voila, "one trophy moose wanted".

I applaud you for opening your mind beyond your teachings and believe me there is a whole wonderous world of hunting possibilities out there, and no need to be ashamed. If you're not feeding yourself or your family you are feeding someone else and their family and there is certainly no shame in that.

well i do make over 150000 a year here in fort mac but the cost of living is high. I love alaska and always wanted to hunt up there. Ive watched all the videos on richard prenookee. Id like to get a bull over 40 points if thats is even possible, ill pay you for your help, as long as you dont leave me in the bush after this thread cou:
 
Alaska is for yankees, we have the same moose right here in the Yukon. 40 points is possible I guess, but we work more on B+C scoring. My biggest bull is 65" wide and scores around 200 B+C, with a total of 23 points.

So if i wanted this year to hunt Alaskan moose where do i go, who do i talk too? I currently have the end of september booked off for moose hunting in newfoundland, but i would never turn down the chance to hunt alaska with a seasoned professional.

what pic are you talking about, i must have missed it, post the pic in here of that alaskan moose, was it tuff to eat? I like to cook the leg bones and crack the bones and eat the marrow myself.
