I dont think we posted this one yet, clients first deer a mature Falloow Buck taken in the last week of the rut.
Client had been a few times with me but not been lucky.
Hugh heard the antlers clashing first and pointed out the source, two big bucks clashing and 3 or 4 does watching. The does were spooked by us so we watched the bucks from about 40 yards locked in until Hugh cracked and I let him take the older one of the two.
We really were after does but it was Hughs first deer so it did the herd some good to take the older one out.
He was a monster for us, weighed in at 120 pounds with his head still on the floor, we didnt have a beam high enough to hang him from. He was so big we used a wheel barrow to get him from the pasture to the chiller.
The rifle is a sportered Mauser 98 in a Parker Hale stock rebarrelled to 7.62 x 51. The bullet we recovered in the hide on his far shoulder. 150 grain Privi soft point.
Boiling out wasnt easy either as his head filled my largest bucket;
A bit of duck plucking as background activity
The Fallow Pricket next to him is miniscule.
After butchering and sorting the steaks and roasting joints we were left with 53 pounds of venison sausage;
If you guys ever want to come and hunt some big Fallow drop me a line, the season runs from Aug 1st to March 31st.
He really did taste fine for Christmas lunch
