Indoor Range Hearing Protection

Who knew costco made custom fitted plugs, great info thx! I like the howard leight review as well, appreciate it guys.

I never shoot indoors because of the posts I read on here by folks who have lost significant hearing or have tinnitus. I shoot outside all winter long with MSA Sordin Pro-X's from SRS Tactical. (By the way, most mirror commandos like me don't need the waterproof Pro-Xs, the Pro will do and they are slightly cheaper. I only bought the Pro-Xs because the Pros were not in stock at the time and I was offered a discount. Same NRR.)

I had Howard Leights and the Sordins are much better, especially with the gel. The gel seals well around the arms of my glasses.

Tell me about the Costco custom plugs - do they sell them at the Optical counter?

The area behind the ear is the mastoid bone & it can transmit sound ( vibration ).
So your comment makes perfect sense. How do I know ?? Check my hearing aids that I now have to wear to hear properly.

My ears were ringing after using only muffs. Double up and save your hearing.

Both comments are right on. The mastoid should be covered which a good set of muffs will do for you that earplugs will not. In addition not all ear muffs are created equal. I recently bought a electronic tactitcal ear muff (Peltor Pro Tac) which is pretty decent. The only reason I got them though is to hear what shooters around me are doing when I am acting as RSO during one of our new shooters training nights.

Any good quality passive ear muff will offer good protection. My personal preference is the Peltor H10A (NRR 30dB) but there are also other good choices out there such as Howard Leight L3 (NRR30 dB).

As a general rule of thumb earmuffs with an over the head band work the best, then ear muffs with a behind the neck band. The cushioning around the ear is also important. Over time it will become stiff and brittle offering less protection (because of a poor seal). These can be changed out with a replacement set of cushions on the better quality muffs or if it is a lesser quality muff just replace the whole thing.

Even with a good quality set of muffs if you are shooting indoors with a bunch of fellows using their big cannons you can double up to provide some added protection.

I use disposable plugs only. I find them to be the best for ear protection and most comfy. And if I am shooting rifles, they dont interfere with stock while aiming down sight.

I like the electronic ear muff when theres no gun fire you can still hear people talking and when somone fires it cuts the sound out they work great 5 of my freinds have them to.
You can find some for around $50

I noticed the majority of the electronic ones all have the same appearance and features, be it peltor, remington, champion, so they must roll out of the same factory.....

That being said, the consumer in me is still concerned about finding the right one, so out of the brands available, which is recommended? Hyskore? Peltor? Howard Leight? I use in ears right now, but hate pulling in and out between active/inactive ranges just to talk.

I also use the Howard Leight and have found them to be excellent indoors and outdoors around large calibers. I have never had any ringing in the ears or any discomfort from noise while using them.

Hi - where can you buy these from In Canada?

Thanks.

You can order the Howard Leight from Brownells.
I recently bought a set from them and and love 'em.
Also always have a set or two of plugs with me to double up for the indoor shoots.

I took my custom ear plugs (http://www.protectear.com/) and my muffs to the hearing specialist this year at work and had a chat with him. First thing was to double up whenever possible. Second he showed me how to check my muffs were still good. Pretty easy, if they are still flexy and squishy they are fine, cracked, slow to respond throw them out. You loose hearing slowly over time, usually by the time there is a loss you are far past the point you think you are. DOUBLE UP! even if it's just foamys on the inside.

Very best,

Ian

Indoors double up, outdoors I'll double up or maybe use just muffs. I use regular earmuffs for cutting the lawn or w.e

Not sure why I generally blast the radio in my car and lose my hearing that way instead :(

I saw this one on Brownells too. It's $59 not bad. Why is it some of them are $100-$300? What are the differences?

I have one that made by Beretta. It's not the electronic one. I found that after a while it hurts my head. Maybe it clamps my head too tight? I'm not sure.
Is it the same case with Howard Leight?
