Completely on the Fence over M&P vs Glock

Hi All,

First off I want to say my intention is not to turn this into a glock vs s&w flame war thread. I'm just looking for some different opinions.

Here is the dilemma I'm faced with. Currently I have two sig p226's (9 and 40) and the gsg 1911. I am looking for another pistol, either the gen4 g17 or 22 or the m&p9 or 40. The intention has been to buy a 40 and purchase a conversion barrel and mags. I would really like to buy a .22 conversion as well. Obviously out of the two, glock is the only one with a 22 conversion. S&W has the m&p22 but I have yet to see it available in Canada or I would give it serious consideration.

The biggest issue I have is that I have never fired let alone held a glock. I know it sounds strange this day in age when everyone seems to have a glock. But none of my friends or range acquaintances do. Most forum threads seem to indicate that from an ergonomics standpoint, the m&p is the better fit and reliability is on par. Apex trigger kits are available to rectify the trigger issue.

I would be taking a chance on the glock and truthfully the only reason it is a serious contender for me is because I know there is the AA .22 conversion kit available for it. Now with that being said, it also seems that most online stores in Canada are out of stock on the advantage arms kits - at least I cant find it in stock.

I am trying to pick a frame I can get the most longevity out of and keep as similar as possible to improve muscle memory while reducing ammo costs. But I would be willing to purchase two m&p's, a 40/9 and the 22, if it were available purely from an aesthetics point of view over the glock. By the same token, I also feel that everyone should own at least one glock. I just dont have the budget to stock both polymer framed choices right now.

I know so much of it is preference but given what I have outlined, if you were in a similar position what would be your choice/preference and why?

Thanks guys

I've shot an M&P9 for a few years now, with 15,000 rounds in mine and it's a fantastic gun. Recently, I've been really wondering about how I'd do with a Glock, so I've decided that at some point in the next year, I'm going to buy a G19 and shoot the sh*t out of it and put my mind to rest. In the end, I'll know which gun I like best and I'll have 2 great guns! It's win/win!

I had a couple of M&P's great guns for the money, but I prefer Glocks. I liked M&P more before gen4 came out.

From the start I liked my M&P9 better than the Glock17. Now I like the Glock better so I sold the M&P... I'm sure there are guys who did the exact opposite. Go to an indoor range and fire both the Glock and M&P and then buy the one you like. I also have the AA kit for the Glock and really like it!

I own a G17 gen3.5 with an AA .22lr kit. The kits come up on the EE once in awhile. My Glock wears a Pacmyr grip for better ergos. I like my setup.
I've read good things about the M&P9....

Own both, like both, will likely never sell the glock. You really can't go wrong either way. Try to get your hands on one before buying, maybe in a shop?

glocks are uncomfortable compared to m&P, i know that for a fact. Glock 17 is not bad, but glock 21 I would never buy one.

I am on the fence over M&P45 asking similar question in my other thread.

glock has awesome repuation for reliability, but M&P is catching up. Well see, hard choice!

I had the exact same dilemma last year. The grip on the Glock and M&P is quite different, you really should handle them both to make up your own mind. I went with the M&P 9 Pro because it fit me better.

For what it's worth, the M&P grip angle is much closer to a 1911's than the Glock.

Have both and love them all. Glock is a little lighter than the M&Ps. M&P ergos a little better than glock. Glock is slightly easier to field strip (1 less action). You cannot go wrong with either.

What fact? The Glock grip is great for some, not so great for others. I've seen 12 year olds shoot the G19 with no trouble. Actually, the Glock grip is supposed to be designed for use with a proper grip.

I currently own an M&P Pro, and recently sold an M&P 9. I don't own any Glocks, but have had the opportunity to try a couple and liked them both very much. The two differences to me, and this is only personal preference, is that I find the M&P more aesthetically pleasing, and I am an S&W fan. I don't feel you could go wrong with either.

I liked how the M&P felt {and shot for that matter} but when I started doing research the Glock had some points of consideration over the M&P, namely: Glock was easier to field strip. By {almost} all accounts the Glock has better QC, and armory support than the Smith. Smith, as you've mentioned had issues with some internals. At the end of the day I went with Glock gen4 and never looked back....It is the Toyota Camry of the gun world.
One more thing to consider is are you going to want to hand load the .40? As you're most likely aware, Glock states that lead is a no no in their barrels (guys do it all the time with no problems) but Glock says don't. I think the Smith is traditional as far as rifling goes, so lead isn't an issue {read warranty} for them.
My .02 :)

At least get your hands on both. I do not own either but have tried both (about 100 rounds each). Not a huge experience but I do like the grip on the S&W more. I had great results with the Glock but the grip is like having a box in your hands. S&W has more rounded corners. And you can change the grip size.
My 2 cents.
