Starting IPSC, new gun recommendations?

<snip> Classic division is new so hard to say what is going to shake out but i am thinking it is going to be 40 cal gun with 8 rounds for major. I know lots of guys seem to think they will shot 9 mm less recoil so they will get more A's and that will compensate for minor but it never seems to work out that way.
Just to add to Walter's comments, there is a 8/10 rule in Classic Division. You can load 8 rounds in the magazine and shoot major (.40 cal+) or load 10 rounds and shoot minor. Two extra rounds and one less possible mag change may be a advantage for some. Top US competitors shoot major in single stack matches. Only you can decide to go major or minor. Here in Canada, all divisions shoot the same stages.

Man, you better stop those "expert advises".

You *can* shoot Standard division in IPSC with any iron sights gun, as long as it fits the box and makes a minor power factor. You can even shoot a Shadow in Standard with first shot double action.

lol I'm full of terrible advice.

Why has no one suggested to the OP to just buy a holster for his very capable pistol and just try that for a while?

I did

"You can take your Black Badge course with your high power if you want. the only thing you will find is that the safety is small and a pain to get off and if you have a nice high grip it will chew up the web of your strong hand. i had a student with one on my last course and by day two he was talking to me about a new gun."

It's kinda sad, the HiPower was the first gun to win the IPSC World Championship and now it doesn't even really have a place in IPSC.
Bring it out to an ORA CQB match and have some fun with it!

If you're going to shoot CD, the pistol must be a single stack 1911.

And if you're going to shoot PD it must NOT be a 1911... unless there is an approved DA 1911 on the list I don't know about?

Also I started out with a crappy Taurus in .40 and shot standard.. I sucked.

Bought a shadow and now shoot Production... I don't horribly suck...

If you are new to shooting IPSC it's all a learning process, so get whatever gun feels "good" to you. The shooter makes the gun. The nice thing about the shadow is that there a million and 1 options you can change out to get it to fit you right and still remain production legal. Most others don't have these options.

Couple more years here and then If I get posted out there, you know I'll be playing a lot out there. Almost considered putting PET on my list of posting preferences because all the shooting matches you guys have out there.

If you want to get really cheap a ruger SR9 is production legal and can be had new for ~$500

Have friends who are big into the Rugers, including the SR40, but None of their handguns do a thing for me maybe the New Vaquero if I was into CAS but that's about it.

Declared Standard I would shoot it single action (cocked and locked).

My list of top three would be CZ SPO1 Shadow, Glock, S&W M&P. Very heavily biased towards the CZ for lots of reasons.

Para LDA.

ewww para... why do I always forget about them? It's the redheaded stepchild of IPSC.

Buy whatever you like. Some things that I have noticed. Production division has overtaken standard in popularity for most of the matches that I have been in. The most popular pistols are Glocks, CZ and variants.

I would not use your inglis at all. I had an old 1942 colt 1911 A1 that I ended up modifying for IPSC. It was fun but every cent spent on modifying it was lost to destruction of the collector value of the old colt.

Find yourself a S&W 625 a bunch of moon clips and practice lots, we need more revolver shooters in the sport. Or if the cost of .45 ACP is to much for you grab a 610 and shoot .40 Cal. Either way it's tons of fun and if you decide to go to another division after a season with the revolver it's gonna seem like cheating having 10 rounds.

You can use your inglis hi power for you black badge, but I would not use it for competition. When I started I did not have an RPAL just a POL, and the only pistol I owned was a colt 1911 A1. I used it for the first few years and I really liked it. However I ended up changing the sights, the beavertail the mag well, the trigger, the mag release, just about everything. In the end I dropped about 500 modifying the gun and it is worth far less than if it was untouched.

In smaller local matches yes. I checked a number of larger USPSA matches and Open or Limited usually is the biggest division with either Open or Limited as the next biggest. Probably because the bigger matches require a bigger budget and those divisions have more people willing to spend money. Even up here most of the level III matches are dominated by Standard division with Production and Open farther back but close in numbers.
