is buying a semi auto rifle in canada worth it?

Instead of dumping ammo into paper at the range, you could go for accuracy and dump ammo into paper at the range - at a slower rate.

An XCR (or other NR black rifle) is much more something I could justify if I had the cash.

Besides a tacticool rimfire is cheap to shoot, no mag limits and most are also non-restricted.



Should the day come that AR's could be de-restricted (or otherwise allowed to be shot places other than approved range) I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Hahahaha that reminds me of a time not to long ago I was watching a video of a fellow from Alberta who was proud of his AR tweaks for long range shots and takes video of him doing these shots out to 500m on his farm. Him and his wife both had AR's and it wasn't until about 2 days later when I suddenly went "holy ####" that was pretty brazen!! Video was on youtube.

This is EXACTLY how I feel as well! I'm a fan of the cheap option for an AR... I have a Norinco... It works... If the NEA rifles had been available when I got the Norinco, I may have gone that way seeing as how it's just a bit more...

I'm buying a norc because I personally dont want to pay alot for a rifle that I can only take to the range. I just "want an AR".

And then, to hunt, or shoot on a private range, I might get something like a SU16 with stock mod, doesnt look that bad.

Most Canadian gun owners, and most here on CGN pride ourselves as being law abiding citizens, and use the argument to our advantage!

Yes i believe it`s woth it to buy a semi auto rifle. I wouldn`t buy one of the restricted models because i want to hunt with my rifles. Looking at a semi auto for next winters coyote hunt, i would get an AR if it was nonrestricted because of the umteen thousands of parts and change overs available. Alas it won`t happen untill a box car of common sense falls on the powers that govern these regulations. The round limit on mags isn`t a large concern for me, usually if you`ve fired 5 rounds at a coyote and he isn`t dead he`s over into the next township. The guys that like to shoot multiple targets at the range find the mag limit a pain.

Now why would you think I was encouraging anything illegal, and thus running afoul of the rules?

I was merely stating a fact that some otherwise law abiding gun enthusiasts see the stupidity of being able to defend against the hordes of zombie groundhogs assailing the farmstead with their beloved .50 Cal; but can't punch paper with an AR-15 for fear of total gun confiscation and being seen as a leper on CGN.

Rest assured good Sir, that I will continue to advocate for my fellow users to follow the board rules, obey the posted speed limits, watch their sodium intake... and never ever take a restricted to a place not listed on the ATT.

a BETTER question is" can you LEAD on running game?"- some of us can, some of us can't - if you can't , then the non-semis are for you- if you can, well, there's your justification-it's really all about preferance, and how quick you can manipulate that action for the second shot-some folks with slides and levers are just fractions of a second behind a semi

THIS IS A MYTH- try comparing our sport to your BELOVED stinkin HOCKEY, golf, or anything else that's popular- there isn't a CHEAP sport out there aside from WATCHING TV ONAIR- it's all a matter of perspective, and prioritizing your budget to afford what you need; also if you can't afford to buy NEW, buy USED, but NOT OFF THE E&E;what does a GOOD set of clubs and balls cost along with your green fees, etc?- same deal with hockey( plus you don't have to buy new equipment every few years while your kid is growing up- or deal with the pain when the kid DOESN'T make it to the BIG leagues
 
I agree. Shooting is a fairly cheap sport compared to alot of things. Any one here ride a bike? A nice rear tire is a years range fees. I can shoot for months for what a chain and sprockets cost. We havent even talked insurance yet.

It depends on what you want to do with said AR15.

If your goal is to mindlessly blast 30 round mags down range without any real thought or care to improve your skill sets than yeah, it's probably a waste of money. Get yourself a 10/22 and you'll be much happier.

If you have different reasons for purchasing an AR15, other than just posing with it in the bathroom mirror, then yes, it's probably worth it.

I wouldn't let the 10 round limit stop you from buying one. When 30 round mags were legal I rarely ever loaded more than 5 rounds anyways.
