Help me pick a gun...

Hello,

I'm looking for a new shotgun, and there are quite a few to choose from, and nowhere to take them all for a 'test drive'.

All I know is I'm looking for a 12 gauge. This will be replacing a Stoeger pump.

- I'm leaning towards a pump, due to the fact that the few semi's I have seen in action have been prone to jamming (especially with target loads).
- The gun will be used for skeet/trap shooting (not heavily, maybe 2-300 rounds per year), duck hunting (5-6 times per year), possibly deer hunting (though I tend to stick with my rifle), and in the future, turkey hunting.
- Budget around $1,000, although I don't mind going slightly over for the right gun, if the value is there.
- Appearance really doesn't matter, I'd rather pay for a good quality gun, rather than good quality engraving/etching/aesthetics.

I want something that is going to last me for the next 30 years, does such a gun exist?

Thanks.

I have beat the crap out of my Benellis and they shoot great and have never failed me. I would go shoulder everything you can, and pick between the ones that feel the best. With a budget like that you can get a quality pump.

For a g-note go benelli or beretta! or go mossberg and save some money! and forget the pump save your shoulder some pain especially for the duck blind and all day at the trap range or shooting slugs...... go semi-auto.....it will take some sting away form the recoil of heavy waterfowl loads and slug shooting. just my opinion!!!

Mossberb 930 with a smooth bore and rifled barrel. 599 plus tax and shipping at cabelas.ca. Will do all you need. That gun will do it all and be under 1000 bucks.

Baikal mp 153 semi auto $570 and it is 7.5 lbs

call me at 403 601 6252 til 11pm

Buy an old used wingmaster 870 with 3in chamber (and removable chokes if you can find one). It has likely lasted for 30 years and if taken care of properly, it should last for another 30 years at least.

Barrels are readily available when you want to go and shoot deer with it. Lots of aftermarket support when it comes to stocks and parts.

And in 30 years when you sell it, it will probably be worth about what you paid for it.

Buy a NEW 870 Wingmaster 28'' BBL 3'' $700-$800 and have a shotgun of unequalled quality and cosmetically attractive also the gun that all other look up to. It will last your lifetime and the next persons lifetime. If it is not your pleasure The browning BPS is excellent. All others are 3's dressed up as 9's

Well, I was beaten to it, but that is what I would recommend.
And of course the BPS is a close second.
They both will do the job you describe very well.
The fit between you and them might be the only difference and of course the price difference as well.
Enjoy your new gun soon.

you can prob get away with Beretta Extrema. the model is few years old but it cycles very well with trap loads and steel 3 1/2" loads.
I use it for hunting and some people to shoot trap with it if they are not hardcore shooter.
you can find extrema at around $1000 i believe. Very reliable semi auto without jams and recoil for both trap and game loads.

Have to agree with the choice of brand/model, but where are you paying $700 for an 870? I picked up my 870 Express Super Mag 3.5" for about $500 taxes in a few years back. I have the black synthetic, and the exact model I have is listed on Cabelas for $389 now.

I've tried different brands, but have stuck with an 870 for 16 years, ever since I was old enough to buy a youth waterfowl license. In terms of reliability, I started off with an 870 my dad bought in 1954. It's never jammed, it's not heavy, it gives you a great shot pattern, no rust and still just looks like a damn fine gun. The pump handle is loose now, but it is almost 60 years old. Started using an 870 he bought in 1984 after I got a bit older, as he bought that one for when I was born. No issues with it at all, though I prefer the pump handle on the '54.

When I got my ESM, there were minimal differences to get used to, with the weight the most noticeable difference, which you'd expect in a 3.5" magnum. Easy to get used to, still easy to move, all the same benefits listed above, and it cycles 2 3/4, 3 and 3.5" shells seamlessly.

The Remington 870 Wingmaster has been in productionsince 1950. Just saying 64 years must mean something.

For a grand, you can get both a Weatherby PA08 pump gun, and Weatherby SA08 semiauto. In nice wood, too.

I would recommend the Wingmaster, but there aren't many options for replacement barrels. Ithaca would be a good choice, but its a fixed barrel.

The Weatherby PA08 comes with a 26 or 28" barrel, but you can buy an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel. The stock/fore end is gorgeous walnut. The factory barrel comes with a few chokes and is chrome lined. its ridiculously easy to clean and maintain as well.

.

He's talking about an 870 Wingmaster, not an 870 Express... There is a few hundred dollar price difference between the 2. The fit and finish on the wingmasters are nicer... hence the extra $$$
