looking for a little more bang than 9mm...?

Like wise, I'd let him have a go with my 1911 if he were to make it to the Grange when I'm there.

IMO, 9mm and .45 are great rounds. .40 is no fun for me, the snap of it hurts my wrist from some strange reason.

Since we can only shoot at targets in the Canada, when I start out at the range, I will start with a .22, put 100 or so rounds on paper, then become bored and go to a .45. Once I realize I just shot 50 dollars within 30 minutes, I go back to the .22. Similar applies to the 9mm, however it is considerably cheaper to shoot, and almost as much fun as the .45

I have 2 9mm's, 4 .45's, and a few others and I like them all.
9 is nice for playing around and 45 is nice for playing around but is a little more money.
If you want more blast you should get a 45 and start handloading then you can shoot for less than the price of 9mm and have a light load for everyday plinking and load it up a heavy for some more excitement and boom when your in the mood. I have a 45 load that is so light there is hardly any muzzle flip and another load that has some pretty good power.

There are plenty of other great cartridges out there like the 10mm, 400corbon, 357sig, 44mag and 50AE (Desert Eagle for the last 2) but ammo is a little harder to find and can be quite a bit more money.

Best advice I can give is to find an indoor range in your area that will let you rent pistols (hopefully you have one) and try a bunch of different guns and cartridges, and buy the one you like.
It may get a little spendy, I've spent a couple hundred in an afternoon trying different pistols at the range in the past but it will let you see which platform fits your hand best and which caliber you like the feel of. You don't want to buy a gun that has so much boom that it causes you to flinch and tense up every time you start to squeeze the trigger.
The level of muzzle blast that causes that reaction is different for everyone.
No one on here can tell you what will work best for you, we will tell you what we though about pistols we have shot but what works for me may not work for you.

If you don't have an indoor range around that lets you shoot their pistols then the best thing to do is spend a lot of time at the local range and offer to let guys shoot your pistol in exchange for letting you try a couple mags through theirs. I have shot a lot of different pistols at the range that way and it's a nice way to meet new guys in your area.

Good luck

10mm is the way to go if you want WOW factor!

If a revolver is your thought then a 454 Casull, 460 S/W, 500 S/W, or even a 45/70 revolver.

Get a 45 - you know you want one. Like the saying goes "I shoot a 45 because they don't make a 46"

NAA.

I found the Glock 22 to be just plain rude. Same with the G22 shooting 9mm.

Plastic frame coupled with a snappy round will grab your attention.

On the other hand 357 can loosen your fillings:D

Something about that doesn't sound right LOL

Get your mind out of the gutter.
Maybe that's the first thing to cross your mind when you meet guys. That's ok though your free to live whatever lifestyle you want.

I guess I should have said meet new friends so the 12 year old wouldn't try to be funny.

I like my Glock 21's. Regular and SF. Extended 10mm barrel and an extended threaded .45 barrel.

When the SHTF they will both be traveling with me. Them and my AR:)

Favorite (non-1911) 45, the M&P45 - easy to shoot well, accurate, reliable and even cheap to buy - all that and you can do your own 'smithing.

Oh yes, then there's the American reason to shoot 45 - "because shooting someone twice is silly"

My favourite non 1911 was a carbine that a guy was shooting at the range,he let me have 300 cases for reloading. He said that the warranty on the rifle wouldn't cover reloads so he let me have them.:D
