So, I sold my Remington in .338 LM , and figured I would like to try out the Savage 110 BA in .338 LM . Bought one brand new, out of the box, new scope and got it all rigged up and ready for shooting. Here is my problem.

I am using Hornady 250 grn , partially open box ( a few from this box in my remington) . Got the first round in , locked and loaded. I was very impressed with the accutrigger. Nice break point. Now when I went to lift the bolt and pull back to eject the cartridge...... it was extremely extremly stiff. I did manage to get the action open... However, the casing is stuck ( and I mean STUCK) inside..

I have attempted to remove several times... but it is good and stuck.. has any one had this issue, I would have loved to try another round, but I cannot get the old one out..

What are the opinions on what happened? headspace issue? I find it pretty co-incidental that the box of rounds:confused: that I was firing with my Remmy with never an issue, all of sudden get a bad one in the brand new savage.... FIRST SHOT?

Thx.

I know a guy who had the exact same problem. It was also a brand new gun the same as yours. He had to take it to a gunsmith and get the chamber touched up( which is unacceptable in my opinion). It also helped when he went with Lapua brass.

Lots of guys on Sniper's Hide with the same issue. Something to do with how they were chambered. Savage gave them new guns, very difficult proposition though being from Canada.

Not sure what happened there but the best way to get it out is to put a cleaning rod down the barrel into the case and just tap the rod with a hammer until the round comes out.

Were these rounds fired in the rem and then reloaded? If so they need to be full length resized before use in your savage.

These rounds were not reloads, factory hornady 250 grn right out of the box. I have bent 2 brass rods trying to tap that casing out... I am a little.... upset that I sold my remington that funtioned flawlessly, was accurate . Just figured it was time to try something new.... next time i will be giving it second thoughts before i sell my perfectly functioning, low round count rifle.

Call Savage Canada in Lakefield Ontario (705) 652-8000 should be the number. They are very good to deal with in my experiance. If there is a problem with the chamber I can say they will likely give you a new rifle. You may have to wait which would suck but they will do their best to make you happy (my experance anyway).

I bought a Savage 110 HS FCP 338 LM back in December. It would not chamber resized brass which had been fired in a different rifle. Not totally surprising you might think.
I bought some Hornady ammo. I tried a couple of rounds and they chambered but were a little on the tight side. I thought oh good a nice tight headspace. However I did not get to shoot it until last week. When I went to chamber the Hornady ammo I realised I had to turn the round a certain way or it would not chamber. Very strange. I went ahead and shot a few rounds anyway. They extracted but all cases have a small dimple on the shoulder so there is some anomaly in the chamber.

I took it to a gunsmith in Ottawa on Friday, just to get his oppinion. His go gauge would chamber but his factory ammo would not. Even more strange.

I will be calling a Savage gunsmith tomorrow. Lots of guys have had good luck with the Savage 338 LMs and quite a few have not. As long as Savage sorts it I won't sweat it.

EDIT: Thanks redshooter I will call Savage Lakefiled tomorrow.

Sound very familiar to what guys on the hide were experiencing. The chambers weren't concentric, all having problems with factory ammo.

Why does it have to be the rifle? I have seen factory ammo blow out primers, also made by hornaday.

Nothing about this screams "Savage CRAP RIFLE" to me. If it chambered, and it fired without blowing a side or rim out of the case it could very well be an over pressure round.

:D I'll bet it's the rifle. I've had two Savage rifles that had problems with the barrel/chamber. They were so good about sorting it out I'd be happy to take the chance on another.

There's been a bunch of talk on other forums about the Hornady brass being pretty soft and trouble extracting from the chamber especially if not perfectly smooth in the chamber (get a small light and look into the chamber), where lapua brass was no problem. Most were at loads of higher pressure- probably like the Hornady factory ammo. Solution seemed to be loading to lower pressures.

Did you notice any marks or concentric ring imprints in the brass that did extract?

This post drives me nuts. Getting warranty work done on your Savage in Canada is very easy. Please dont post like that. Thanks.

I havn't ruled out the possibilit of the ammo.. Just found it odd that my previous rifle never had an issue, I borrowed my old .338 LM back, finished the rest of that box without incident. so either it was that one round, (that I still havn't gotten out) or the rifle. I will try again tonight to see if I can get it out.

Just a heads up. When you call Lakefield you can wait a while to speak to a real person and all they tell you is to call one of the warranty centres in Canada. ;)

I know cos I tried it twice. lol!

I have contacted savage on this issue, was told the following.

" Sir, we have had many firearms returned for this type of problem before. We have thoroughly gone through each firearm and have determined to be a Hornady issue. We have found no mechanical or spacing issues. You can feel free to send the firearm back to us pre-paid shipping, we will inspect for any defects and return the rifle to you "

At this time, for fun I decided to poke the bull a little bit and asked if this is in no way a rifle issue, why is it that the savages seem to be the only rifle with repeat issues with Hornady ammunition.

his reply " sir, all i can tell you is to contact Hornady , I do know they have been developing a new formula for the brass and hope to have it completed soon. "

So, in lew of this information I am going to get that empty casing out of the rifle one way or 13,000.00 others, and I am going to run some different kinds of factory ammo through.. Hoping they will go. Doese any one need a large surplus of factory Hornady .338 LM 283 grn ?? apparently I have no use for it anymore. **shrugs**

Isnt that kind of like buying a new car, filling it up at the local shell station and the vehical quits. When you phone the dealer, they simply say " Sorry sir, we forgot to tell you that car will only run on Esso fuel " ?

We will see what happens when i can source another brand of ammo.
