stepping up from a .270win

It depends what you consider "stepping up". The first centerfire I bought myself was a .270, and it cheerfully killed everything it got pointed at. Not content to leave well enough alone, I moved to a .35 Whelen. It also killed what it was pointed at, but at the price of a looping trajectory. It was hard to escape the conclusion that I was loseing more than I was gaining.
Like everyone else a 30-06 had to be tried, but depending on bullet weight results varied from the same old thing to sluggish. Then there was the .300 Win Mag stage. That was great since I got my .270 velocities back, with the 30-06s 180 bullets. It killed things too, includeing my skinny shoulder.Recoil tolerance had not yet been earned.
About then, the STW came out. It did what the others didn't, it out-270ed the 270, while not takeing any crap from the .300. Finally there was a change that was useful, measureable and obvious for the hunting I did the most. A sane person might have stayed there.

I would put in my vote for
1. 338 WM or LM
2. 375 ruger
3. 300WM

I shot a .270 for years then went to a .300 WM and besides the cost of ammo it sure puts a big hole in deer sized game.WM is great if you want to shoot lots of horse sized game otherwise stay with your .270 you'll be glad you did.
Instead of pretending that you actually have a question and wasting others' time answering, why not just start a thread: "The 270 - Greatest Ever". Except of course that's already been done dozens of times here.....
I think the next step would be 300-338wm. However the 35whelen offers a lot of punch with heavier bullets on the same case/action. I'd go personally with the 9.3x62 or 375hh or change it up completely and get a 4570.

This is interesting. C-FBMI, is there game you'd hunt with a .300 magnum that you wouldn't hunt with a .270? The game I wouldn't hunt with a .270 I wouldn't hunt with a .30 caliber rifle either. The difference in the diameter of the expanded bullet between a .277 and a .308 is minimal, velocity is similar, and bullet weights are comparable. Its not until you get to the mediums that the larger expanded frontal area combined with and the penetration enabling mass becomes proportionately larger to the extent that there is a clear advantage in wound volume on heavy/dangerous game.
To my way of thinking, the most dangerous thing about owning a .375 big game rifle, is justifying the ownership or use of anything else.
