New LAR15 magazines malfunction in AR-15

I bought 8 of those 10 round AR magazines last month from Questar and I'm having feeding problems with them in my PWS AR-15. I thought they'd be the same as the previous RRA ones (also bought from Questar) but they're different.

When I load 10 rounds in them, it's almost impossible to push out the rounds by hand. They're way too tight! I loaded all my magazines and on about half of them I had to take out the floor plate off to take the rounds out.

So about 1/4 of the time the bolt doesn't have enough force because of the friction to push the round in the chamber when I hit the bolt release or pull the charging handle. (This AR-15 is cleaned/lubed up every time I go to the range and has about 5000 rounds down the pipe without any malfunction).

In the pics below, the mag on the left is the "old" RRA one, the new LAR15 is on the right.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with these mags? I'm kinda bummed because I was planning on using them for service rifle competition but so far they've been very unreliable.

Yup found the same thing on last batch I had as well, very dissapointing. I hope that Questar and others will resolve this by getting some original RRA back in not sure. I'll be emailing them as well on this and hope others that have issue will as well.
 
I bought the same mags about 2 months ago , I had the same problem... My riffle will not feed out of these mags. I can not take the rounds out of these mags with my bare hands and I'm a BIG guy. Never running these mags again or ordering from this distributor.
 
I just got two LAR-15 mags in the mail from CanadaAmmo instead of IWI 30/5 rounders that I got last time with my last Tavor.

They look like the ones you got, BUT the follower in mine is different, it's a plastic bullet shaped mold on the top of the follower.

Mine has the writing stamped on the mag body & says;
RRA MODEL LAR-15 PISTOL MAGAZINE
.223/556 NATO-10 ROUND CAPACITY

on the floorplate it says;
A.S.C. LLC
NEW BRITAIN CT

Kinda wondering how many varients of the LAR15 mags there are... I believe I have 3, maybe 4 varients if I sort through my LAR-15 mags that I have bought since they came out...

my guess is that you will have to do the fix yourself based on Questar's less than perfect return policy, but you could always give them a call... i wouldnt be surprised if they blame it on your ghetto, sub-standard PWS rifle;) kidding of course, nice rig


oh wait...they probably sold you the rifle as well........
 
Is it too much upwards force from the spring or is it a matter of the tabs on the follower bottoming out on the floorplate when fully loaded. Can the round be stripped cleanly by the bolt when loaded with only 9 rounds?

I know some early mags had to have a little material on the follower tabs removed.... enough to ALMOST fit 11 rounds so as to alleviate the pressure on the follower when the mag was full and get them to feed reliably.

I would dremel the follower prior to cutting the mag spring..... the spring tension is designed to supply adequate pressure thru the full range of motion. I realize only a small amount of the spring would be trimmed but.. depending on the quality of the spring it *may* result in insufficient pressure on the follower when there are only 1-2 rounds left in the mag.

Just my $.02....
 
Ive never heard of any 10rd AR mags being overly reliable, thats why theyre typically loaded to 9 max. If you ask around IPSC Circles theres often reference to having to tweak the followers, but like boomer said, cutting the spring is probably not a good idea. 3packs of Magpul followers are cheap enough to order from Brownell's or Wolverine that if you bugger a follower you can just put another one in. I got some last time I orderd LAR mags from Questar, but when I took the mags apart they already had the magpul anti-tilt followers in them, all of them fed reliably, but one repeatedly tilted the round out at the wrong angle so it jammed.
I think thats why people just cave and use the reliable pinned 5rd PMAGS, the extra 4 shots just arent worth the headache if you need to clear a jam under a timer, and the length of the pmags is also an added +.

Cut one "link" off of your mag spring and bend the end of it back to match the original profile.

I've done it before and it works. It MAY NOT be the correct solution to your problem, but it helped to fix my feeding issues.
 
I had the same problem with a couple. File down the front of your mag. My rounds were hanging up on that area as the bolt tried to chamber them. They work great now with 10 rounds
 
9 rounds 5 rounds, makes zero difference on any of ones I am having issues with. I am going to try to cut spring as mentioned and also try to file away down the front feed lip of the metal mag as well, otherwise they're garbage anyhow. Man I wish there were 10 round pistol labelled Pmags! :mad:

As for my LARs that had sticky feed, they seem to get better over time with use. I made up some dummy rounds to cycle through the action feeding from the mag.

My only problem now is I have a couple that don't want to lock into the mag well if the bolt is closed. I have them marked as such for now but I would prefer to get that fixed.
 
You can see the problem in your own pic you posted of the comparison of the RRA and LAR mags. Look at the front view pic. You can see that the Round in the LAR mag sits lower. I filed down the front of the LAR mag, the flat part. Will the round slide forward at all? If not its probably the spring, if it does but snags, it's probably the front of the mag, which is what it was in my case.
