Ontario Cougars!

So, the MNR denies any existance and it is all a big cover up.
They finally acknowledge their presence, and that is a big cover up?
Got it! Phew, glad that is all sorted out.

It will all be sorted out when one has been killed....Until then?????

cougar

I have seen one firsthand in northern ontario......50ft off my front bumper in broad daylight on a paved highway. No doubt what it was i can assure you.

Killed where? If a body showed up in a truck in any reputable place the same people are going to make excuses as to why it is fake. There is no solution to this phenomenon that defies all logic.
However, as I said before, seen it myself, so I am no longer one of the naysayers.

Now, I want to see the MNR research Mediumfoots and hybrid moose/caribou.

Well these are both MNR top secret projects that they get involved in because they are awash with money.

The Mediumfoot was just a bigfoot whose feet they cut down with a rasp, they were concerned that bigfoots big feet were crushing the delicate forest floor.

The mooseaboo was developed to have a heartier far north moose to raise as feed for the coogars.:nest:

So... Cougar defense thread in 3....2....

A BIG bag of catnip ..... 'n then ya give that giant purring 'puddy a tummy rub.

A cougar made the tracks that I studied. Cougar.

Sorry, don't carry a camera, and the mid-morning heat soon wiped out the track's detail. So, no documentation.

How about this tidbit?, those tracks were within 150 yards of occupied homes, and less than 500 yards from a functioning six-person chairlift.

Could care less if anyone believes me.

I have seen 2 in Northern Ontario. Both on the way to my trapline. I am quite familiar with lynx vs cougar....and well the tails on these two were quite long. Both spotted crossing a LARGE logging road during the day. Jumped across a 15 foot ditch like my house cat jumps on the couch. One spotted in 1990 with my father...he saw it too. Second in 2007 I was by myself but it was unmistakable. Almost the exact same spot. I have no delusions it was the same cat as the sightings were 17 years apart.

Don't you find it odd that with all the wolf bait piles and wolf snares/traps out there on the hundreds of traplines that an accidental cougar catch has not been reported? I figure if they were around some trapper would have snagged one by now and reported it to MNR, which they would use as proof over a few hairs on barbed wire.

Well, for starters, they won't let you keep it, so some trappers may not dash to the phone to report the catch. There's been a couple trapped in MB, with the latest one being a big male caught in a coyote snare in SW Manitoba last year, Turtle Mountains.

Is there any particular reason you figure they can't be in Ontario? The deer population is probably higher than ever in NW Ontario. We have them in the Whiteshell, that's just across the border. Cougar have been known to the MNR in Kenora for years, lots of info on the internet. When provincial game officials affirm the fact, there's usually some truth to it.

No, not the attractive middle aged women but the cat.

I always believed there was, never seen any myself, but I am glad it is finally proven "scientifically"

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for it, but thought you would all find interesting

Thanks for the interesting thread, OP.

Some of us know, ..... and there are those that seem somewhat more than mildly sceptical.

There Was a time, when conventional wisdom deemed the earth .... flat.

Maybe your next one could address Wolverine's?? :nest:

Well the last one was shot in Maine in 1940 but I'm sure there's still some around. Many sightings since. On a different note a hounds man in Utah checked to see what his dogs had bayed on a rock ledge and it was a jaguar.Lucky for him he had a camera and sent the pics to Outdoor Life in the early 90's as I recall.Still some in CA ,TX +NM as well...last known Mexican grizzly shot in the Sonora desert also in 1940.....Harold

Are there cougars in Ont? Probably. There is no reason for them not to be here is there?

Are there a lot of them? Probably not.

Ontario is a big place, cougars move around, not sure they know to stop when they get to the "welcome to Ontario" sign.

I have heard for years the MNR covert release story. I have a acquaintance that works for the MNR and he swears he saw one in his barn/farm yard at night and he watched it for 30 minutes....I said "and you didnt take a picture"? ....he said he was "mesmerized"...

I dont think it matters one way or the other if they are here or not. So what?

I don't think anyone who has frequented the Opasquia Provincial Park,

would question the presence of wolverines in north-western Ontario.

Yep, there are tons of guys here claiming to have seen one, or their friend, buddy, sister's realtor, etc has seen them. More sightings are discussed here from Ontarians than I heard all year in cougar country in the Rockies. That one photo, who knows, looks fishy and I don't buy everything on the news, but let's say it's real; that's one. Where are the other hundred shots, and trail cam photos? Cougars are routinely caught on trail cams in the foothills, with far less human sightings, but why not in Ontario where I read more rumours of sightings than anywhere else? Like I've said, I do believe a small population is likely there, I don't believe all these sightings.

sounds like you and i are both the "gotta see it to believe it" types. i didn't believe my dad when he told me he found cougar tracks about 15 minutes SW of brantford or my firearms course instructor that said he watched one walk by while he was sitting in his stand (delhi?). after seeing that one jump in front of us last year there's simply no denying it. quite honestly, i thought it was my eyes deceiving me, but my buddies reaction confirmed what i thought i saw.

as for not being able to locate a single track. this was the summer time and the ground dries rock hard in that area when it hasn't rained recently. actually, the only time we ride on that trail is when the open field is too dusty on the atv's.

sooooo...what kinda do do would farmer joe be in for shooting a cougar while out deer hunting?
