Seriously thinking about a .50 AE

Hello,

I never thought I would actually be considering this (maybe I am getting sick) but I am actually thinking I would like to have the infamous Desert Eagle as an addition to my gun collection.

I am thinking about it more for the "Fun Factor" of the gun... I have shot one a couple of times now and it was a pretty fun gun to end the day at the range with!

I recently moved from Toronto to Edmonton so I dont really know the shops in the area yet. I guess my question is what seems to be the going rate for these guns (black oxide)? Only one I found for sale was at Wild West in the Edmonton mall and there prices seem high on everything. Also whats the cost like for the bullets to reload this beast? I searched them and all i seem to get back is a bunch of crap about the airsoft versions and am having trouble finding one for sale in the .50 cal model in Canada...

Any help with price info and a good place to buy would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I researched them quite a bit and know about the reliability issues.

The Shooting Edge in Calgary usually has one or two on the shelf. Might want to give them a call. (don't just look on their website, notoriously inaccurate for stock..) I am not sure of the caliber as these aren't really my thing.

Bullets aren't that pricey but you can't use lead in these so jacketed only. Adds to price of components.

Have you ever thought about a S&W 460 or 500 instead? Better guns for less $$ IMO.

Just to note.. I think the only indoor range you can shoot that in is Phoenix. Last time I checked Wild West did not allow it as their range was just too short.

If you want to shoot the Deagle or the 500 S&W before buying then head over Phoenix. They have both of those for rent (I think they have 2 versions of the Deagle .50AE and 44Mag)!

Unfortunately I can't help with the other parts of your questions. I don't know anyone who owns one.

The DE in standard finish are about $900 for mk1,mk7 maybe 900-1500.mk19$1500-2000and if you add a finish to the gun +250.
but for a new gun i have never seen one less then $1950.
http://www.astorarms.ca/restricted_handguns.htm this guy has the newest model in stock.
rounds cost about $3 a shot. some places have them in stock cheaper but when u add tax and shipping its more then $3

i looked around allot when i bought my desert eagle. it was a MK 19 and had the fluted barrel and every thing. i got it used for $1100. just got lucky.
mine is a .44. i think you can have more fun with the .44. lots or different ammo you can try and cheaper and still a big bad a** round.

i know someone who has an origenal desert eagle mk1 with the 13" barrel in .357 if your interested. nothing turns heads more then that with a grate big scope on it.its $995

Pheonix is where I shot one actually.

The wife and I are members there so finding a range will not be a problem.

But thanks for the heads up!

I have only put 20 rounds through one and the sound, feel and cool factor has a hold on me...

Not to mention the muzzle flash is like looking at the sun!

I was just hoping I could find something closer to $1700...

How much are you going to shoot it? Most often .50 DE is a safe queen and .44 is a range king. It's your call.
BS
H:S:
I try to blast my 50 AE atleast 4 times a year and I can go threw atleast 3 boxes with eaise. MY 500 S&W on the other hand I maybe take it out once a year. and 44 mag suck compared to the 50AE.

You try to shoot at least 4 times a year and 3 boxes of ammo. If you think it is a lot, we are not on the same boat. And I wonder how many people will agree with the last part of your statement.

I bought my 50AE mk XIX in the late 90s, and have never regretted it.

1) Handloading significantly controls costs. Powder and primers are similar to a 44, bullets are a little more spendy, but not prohibitively so and are pretty easy to find nowadays. Hornady, Speer, and IMI brass have all done very well for me...Starline not so much. Getting a load that works takes work. (Factory has always run well for me though)

2) The gun, like most very accurate guns, is finicky. I have to replace the springs every 1500 rounds or so. It's touchy about limp wristing and light-loading.

3) There are at least a half dozen folks involved in the sport because of my DE. They saw it in a movie or MW, found out I had one, and HAD to try it out. None have gone on to buy one, but I do get a lot of friends asking if I'll bring it along.

4) The 50 gets a lot attention on the line. If you don't like strangers walking up, ooohing, ahhhing, and asking if they can put a round through your pistol...this is not your gun.

5) It's not everyone's cup of tea.

After more than a decade with mine I still think it is 10 pounds of Schwarzeneggerian fun on a 5 pound steel chassis.

After calling a few local shops I am getting the impression selling these guns is kinda frowned upon.

One shop told me they need special permission to buy one and now I am wondering if I need some kind of "special permission" to buy one?

Get one. I have shot many IPSC fun maches, 3 gun and an IPSC qualifier.

50 AE or bust.

Flame On!

No, you don't need anything special, RPAL only.

I was checking one out tonight at Triggers and Bows...I have to admit, I have been thinking about adding one to my collection since firing one in Vegas last fall. It's getting to feel like a bit of a bad habit, this shooting something and then wanting/needing/having to have it! I'm worried that soon I will be afraid to shoot anything new or unusual ;).

The one at Triggers and Bows was $1975. Gorgeous chunk of steel!
