Im looking for a new shotgun. I'm going to be backpacking (just an excuse to buy a new gun)
It must be compact enough that if I wake up and something is tearing a hole in my tent I can grab it and get rounds out the door. (think bears!)
It doesn't have to be a hunting shotgun as I have one already, that been said it wouldn't hurt either...
I can't have it covered in rust because of a small amount of rain (west coast wether)

I've narrowed it down so far but am still open to suggestions!
Here's what I've come up with so far:
Mossberg JIC mariner

Or JIC cruiser. My concern with the cruiser is that the bluing won't hold up to salt water spray.

If I bought a JIC id be buying an ATI top folding stock for it to have that stability if needed...

Or a Mossberg 500 marine with full size stock...

I'd also replace the stock on this with a top folder.

Or should I go with the Remington 870 tactical? my concern with this is rust, I recently bought a rem 700 SPS and even with oil on all metal surfaces it collects surface rust faster than flys to dog $&@!

I'd suggest a Dominion Arms Grizzly (870 clone) either in 12.5" barrel, or 8.5. Then get it painted. I recently Duracoated 2 870's with my father in a morning, and was very pleased with the results. Canada Ammo (dealer at the top) sells the Grizzly.

Not a huge fan of pistol grip only guns, they are hard on the wrist, and difficult to shoot with any accuracy. Especially if you are using this a bear gun with some hard hitting/kicking slugs. There are lots of videos on YouTube of people losing control of them or hitting their faces.

I still LOVE my wingmasters (I currently have 3). If you are quick, you can still get them for about $300 on the EE. What I have done is get a litre of Teflon, and teflon coat them (from the looks of it a litre should do about 20 guns). Moisture resistant and looks great. I have a slug barrel on the way from EE, and it will be getting ported and teflon coated to go with the rest of them. I have one set up with ghost ring sights and to be honest, I much prefer good old irons.

Doubt you will find a much better work horse than an older model 870........

pistol grips, especially the non-ergo mossberg cheese-grater grip, are worthless. the ATI top folder is too.

IMHO can both of them (no pun intended), and buy a 12.5" or 8.5" Grizzly. Buy a Hogue 12" LOP stock and install it.
rotncore's suggestion about painting it isnt a bad idea, but personally i couldnt care less if a hard use shotgun got some scratches and patina on it.

^ Manbearpig is right about the pistol grips(Try firing all day with heavy loads not mentioning the trigger angle and crap sight alignment) No trap superstar uses a pistol grip. A regular full size stock will slip in(and out in a hurry) into a carry scabbard better than folders and pistol grips. I like the Houge stocks and forearms. 500,590,870,1200(win defender) doesn't matter they're all good. I'd keep the barrel at 18" to keep the cops with no gun law knowledge at bay. I can't count the number of times when guys look at my shotguns and say," is that legal "? I ditched all Chinese shotguns i own, for they aren't reliable. FYI The JIC tubes will collect dust in the basement.

I use a 870 marine mag. I've taken it swimming and it gets full of muskeg and dirt. I put a butler creek folding stock on it so if there's time I can fold it out and it still functions folded. I put a led maglite on it and it has been great for camp. It fits in the quad box and doesn't completely deafen me when I don't have time to put on ear protection. The only issue I've had with it was it is sometimes hard to cycle with walmart bulk 2 3/4 cheap stuff. I even got all my ducks one year with it.

the only Chinese shotguns ive ever owned are the pump Grizzlies, so i cant speak for the HP9, or other cheapies like the Hatsans, the cheap doubles, etc.

The Grizzlies ive owned have been no less reliable than any 870 or 500 ive ever owned: meaning they have yet to fail to go bang, or extract.

the 870 design is not very complicated, not exactly hard to clone them. the Grizzlies ive owned have had far superior fit/finish to ANY 870 Express ive ever seen. i would put them between the Express and Wingmaster in terms of F&F and materials.

i use a Mossberg Maverick 88 12ga as my kick around work horse shotgun. interchangeable barrels, so i can slap on a 28" barrel for hunting and target shooting or a 18" barrel for blasting and camp defence.

i have over 6000 rounds through it. dropped it, kicked it, threw it. mud, snow, sand, water, sleet, hail, rain, dust and dirt. i only clean it when it gets so gummed up it's tough to work the action. it keeps right on trucking.

Where did you buy your 8.5" or 12.5"? Thanks

Am I limited with accesories if I get the 8.5" over the 12.5".

I can get all 870 parts right?

When researching my DA shotgun I went with the 12.5" because from what I read you could interchange 870 barrels with it, the 8.5" has a shortened mag tube that won't fit longer barrels. As far as I can tell, most other 870 accessories will fit DA shotguns of either length (I know that stocks are no prob) but Manbearpig should know for sure since he has a 8.5".

no.
the 8.5" is much more limited in what you can do with it. the 12.5" barrel length is the minimum you can put on a 'standard' Remington 870. in order to make the 8.5" (and 6.5") 870s, the forend and mag tube had to be shortened, and the lug moved back on the barrel. therefore standard 870 barrels, magazine tube sling plates, heatshields, foreends, etc either will not fit at all, or will require modification.

if you are concerned at all with compatibility, then pick up the 12.5" Grizzly, and save $100 while youre at it. everything fits on those, even 870 barrels.
if this is your first 'shorty' then get a 12.5, itll be much more versatile and youre not giving up that much overall length.
this is a 12.5" 870P, not a Grizzly, but they will look more or less the same :)

give some serious consideration as to whether or not you want ghost ring sights. when buying a Grizzly it costs only $9 extra, but adding aftermarket GR sights to a bead shotgun will cost you $150-200.

I got long arms and I'm afraid that I'm going to take one of my fingers off if I shoot one of those short barreled guns. The Remington 870 Marine Magnum is just too expensive for my liking so it is the mossberg but the other Remington would be fine...

How many shots do those short griz hold? You said paint I've painted guns before but I dont like how they turned out, I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on this gun id like to keep it <700 after tax. also on I don't know what the Teflon coating stuff is do you guys do that yourselves? How much does Teflon cost?
I really like stocks with a pistol grip I have a tapco on my sks and the angle to the trigger has never been a problem.

And there's no such thing as a beater gun, I respect my stuff and the only time this gun would be in rough condition is if I was stranded without a cleaning kit.
But it still has to be able to hold up to salt water spray.

I just looked at the 12.5" and that thing is sweet... I might have to buy one. Someone mentioned a holster, any pics? And with the money left over I could have it powder coated or painted or what ever...
I don't buy things sight unseen though so ordering offline is not an option. I need to handle the gun I'm going to buy before I buy it.
