Gun Cart - safe muzzle direction

So here is a question for the Cowboy Action and 3 Gun guys. If you are using a gun cart of some kind to ferry your long guns and gear between stages, what do you think is the safest direction for your rifle/shotgun muzzle to point.

I am in the process of building a cart for CAS that is based on a used 3 wheel jogging stroller and, having tried my long guns pointing in both directions, my personal preference would be muzzle down as I would rather have the gun pointing at the ground than at my head :eek: However, I have spoken to some guys that say as the safe way to carry your long guns is muzzle pointing up, then that's how they should be mounted on the gun cart.

What say you guys?
 
the commercial cart I have seen have been muzzle down... and fairly easy to do with the right hardware.

Most 3gun and cowboy matches have right in the range rules long guns are muzzle up wether being.carried or in a rack thus prevents people being muzzle swept
 
As pictured in the photos of the stroller carts...
Breach/Chamber flags utilized.

Accidents can only happen when people are handling guns.. If a firearm is in a cart/stroller muzzle up or muzzle down doesn't matter.

Muzzle down you could richochete a boolit off the ground.
Muzzle up you could shoot yourself under the chin or launch a round three county's over.

well...All you guys can can talk back and forth all you want about the safest way to have the guns stored in your gun cart...but at the end of the day he is building a cart for CAS and SASS law is muzzle up. We have been this route already and according to SASS there is no room for movment on this...also if you are shooting at a range that uses SASS rules (as most are) ...your pretty well locked in there as well

A lot of high priced carts are straight up in the air, and angled when moving. Other carts are perfectly horizontal.

They come in all styles and I also prefer muzzle down, but I wouldn't care which way the muzzle points as long as no one is handling it.
 
The problem with muzzle down guncarts in CAS is that firearms are supposed to be transported to the loading and unloading tables muzzle up. Unless you take your cart to the firing line you run a real risk of sweeping someone as you remove your long guns from the cart and move them to muzzle up. Then you don't get to play anymore. Some CAS clubs do not allow carts that carry muzzle down.
 
A good point was mentioned in an earlier comment. Whether you think your muzzle should point up or down is irrelevant. Most CAS ranges stipulate , carts or carrying must be muzzle up. End of conversation.
 
that three wheeler looks good. Could maybe use some bigger wheels for rough ground.

If you are building a more "Cowboy accepted" 2 wheel wood cart, use the largest wheels you can find. It is hard to make a 2 wheeler so that the muzzle of your carbine isn't pointed under your chin, I could never get used to that so I built one useing a 4-wheel garden cart. By far the best I have used.
Guns remain standing straight up in the rack and pulling a wagon in rough terain or loose ground is so-so much easier than the 2 wheeler.

Well i would take it as a reason to talk some sense to the SASS folks.....

Mind you I do not shoot CAS or SASS so I will keep my muzzle up or down as I see fit.
 
It is interesting to see CAS take such a hard line on gun carts when they allow cross draw holsters :eek:

Apparently:

muzzle toward the ground = not allowed
muzzle pointed uprange = just fine.
 
These gun cart threads are the awsome... But more awesomer with pics...:)

My first cart was great for 3-gun... For three shooters.
Held six long guns and all our gear bags...

Third one.. and the one I'll stick with is the converted baby stroller type.
They work best because they have capacity and fold up nicely for transport.
