To the Smith experts. A cousin of mine purchased a S&W model 29 back in the 80's. Im assuming 6 inch barrel blued just like the movie like everyone got. Its only had a box or two of bullets through it. If its in decent condition what are they worth? I know they made a ton of them and they are not that rare. I tried the search function but 29 and 44 don't come up because they are too short. Im going to try and score it off him with a decent cash offer. Thanks.

Oh.... Someone throw an Elmer Keith or Ivory grip 29 picture up to. I don't think any true pistol guy can get enough of those. :D

I think my buddy Dan may be a little on the conservative side. A nice six inch Model 29-3 should bring at least $700.00, more if it has the original wooden presentation case, tools, manual, etc. I have no trouble getting at least that much for the ones I sell.

Well, it could just be me. I would go higher for a -2 or earlier, but unless it's an unusual variant a -3 or newer just doesn't have the same value in my opinion. FWIW. - dan

Yeapers, I'm a fan of the -2 and earlier S&W Models. Pinned barrel and recessed cylinders are the way to go. Additionally, all of the S&W pistols I've encountered from that era had great triggers. Add in the wonderful original finish, quality workmanship, of course no craptastic internal lock and you've got all the reasons you need for wanting the early models.

I agree totally, my 29-3 and 629-? were not as nice as my P&R 29's.

Dirty Harry carried one with a 8 3/8" barrel.

It's the reason I picked-up a cosmetically challenged 29-2, shoots great and it'll soon look as good as it performs :)

Where did you send your 29 for re-finish? I just got my 29 back from an ARMCo re-blue. Looks BNIB good now. Gunnar did a fantastic job. Going to send him my 17 for the same treatment later this year.

Going to send mine to Murray Charlton. No office intended to Gunnar, had good dealing with him. Murray seems to be the guy for S&W tuning and afterward gonna have him, chop to 4.5" and re-finish her. There was a pic posted on another thread of a 4.5 barrelled M29 that haunts my dreams.

And before anyone wants to jump on me for mucking with a M29-2 they should know the previous owner did a real number on her. Ridden hard and put away wet. Really messed up the finish

4.5inches won't look bad at all but the times I've seen pictures of 29's with a 5 inch barrel they just looked SOOOOO right. Much like a K frame with a 4 inch barrel visually looks ideal. Not to mention that a 4 inch K balances divinely in the hands.

This is the beastie I speak of :D
