hello, im looking to get a better deer/brush gun. my current deer rifle is a stevens 200, which is a nice gun but im looking for a little bit better gun. i want it to have a quality set of back up irons just incase im in the bush and my scope fails.
thanks.

scope wont fail unless its tasco thats cracked.
cant go wrong with any remington700 actions or savage if you want to get both affortable and reliable in the bush. sky is the limit and most calibers will do fine with deer unless its 22lr.
iron sights are useless when you have decent scope mounted properly unless you keep smacking the scope against tree

i wouldn't really say that savage is better than a stevens. Just a different dress on. All the defenders will be by shortly to proclaim how accurate the stevens is and that's all that matters...:D

If you want a good, reliable, hunting rifle, look at the new M70's or Ruger Hawkeye...;)

thats what my grandpa said. he had a 400 doller scope on his rife no iron sights he went up to hunt elk for 10 days. his scope broke when he was sighting it in and had no back up sighs or any thing like that. ended up he wasted a 7 hour trip. thats why i want iron sights and i am a irons guy. not a huge fan on scopes.

lol ouch.... that must have sucked!
For me i usually carry 2 rifles for hunting trip just incase.. guess that is same idea as a back-up sight.
depending on how much you are willing to spend but i really like rem700 actions... only because if i wear the barrel out, i can spend $600 more for match grade barrel in the future.. i do shoot alot and tend to mod the rifle here n there..
if you like to customize like me, then rem700 would be the best bet..
have tried T3, Weatherby mark V, Accu, Winchester M70, Browning A bolt, ruger M77 They all work great but choice was rem700 then ruger m77.
have soaked them in snow and rain while hunting and still love them!
if you reload then some other caliber would also work but for factory loads 308 and 300wm would also work fine i think.
FirearmsCanada.com sometimes have very good deals on rifles.
Hope ya find a great rifle!

Any of the many variations of the Rem 700 or model 7, super accurate (usually) right out of the box, good adjustable trigger, and priced from 500 bucks to 3000 bucks if you like.
As far as sights go I personally detest them and they cut the sh!t out of my hands when using rifle for a club. Seriously though if I travel to hunt and/or pay a bunch of money, I always take a spare scope in rings that I have previously mounted and sighted in on that rifle, as well as primary one on rifle. Never had to use it yet, but way better insurance than sights.

I would go with Browning BLR takedown - light, nice gun, decent iron sights, takes down to 2 ~20" pieces, the advantage of the lever action for faster follow up shots...

I traded my stevens 200 in 308 out for a weatherby vanguard sporter in 308. No iron sights, bought it on sale at wholesale sports for less then 500 bucks. Will be buying a second vanguard. Probably in 25-06 as a back up/alternate/cause I want one.

I'd be spending some $$ on a good scope right now instead of another rifle.

Lot of nice 308s out there. There's a nice Model Seven laminated on the EE right. Don't forget the Remington 760/7600s, anyone who owns one, likes them. Either way, try a few out and see what fits best.

Another vote for the Savage 99. My favorite is the F model, either in 300 savage or 308 with a Williams Foolproof rear sight.

If it's a 308 you are looking for, I have mounted a raised see-through scope on a Browning BLR. This gives me the option of the iron sights at close range in the bush or my scope for the longer shots. The Browning BLR 308 is is a short and powerful rifle that is manageable in the bush.

Yep, then they put it on a gun and charge $200 more for the gun cause it comes with a $20 scope.

do it right, buy yourself something your gonna be comfortable with. I'd suggest a Savage American Classic as it comes with a walnut stock and accutrigger and a bunch of different calibers to choose from.

308 is nice but if your only planning on hunting deer with it I'd go 7mm-08.

I would suggest a Winchester 88. There are two nice pre-64s on the EE right now in .308. This is a reliable bush gun and a great caliber. If the 88 doesn't do it for you, get a BLR in .308. Both of these guns have nice iron sights and are easy to scope.

Older Parker Hale, 7600/760, Model 7, some of the T3's have open sights, same with Ruger, and Sako. There's lots to pick from just be patient and one will come along that floats your boat. As said a spare scope or spare rifle is a good option as well. If I'm doing any kind of hunt that is further then a couple hours I pack two rifles.
