hey guys thinking about picking up a standard model Henry H001 for a good summertime fun gun (plinking, crows, woodchucks and the like) but I have never heard anything about the accuracy of these little rifles, all I am looking for is minute of woodchuck vitals(inch at 50 yards would be nice but inch and a half would suffice) at say 50-75 yards are these things capable of providing that?
Thanks,
Hunter.

With a scope, most definitely. A lot of folks don't like the stock irons, and I like optics in general. In my experience with the h001, the kind of accuracy you're talking about was easily acheived(w/scope, off a rest). Best group I've had at 50 yards was a bit under an inch, with an average more like an inch and a half. I'm not the best shot. And the lever is just fun.

Now, a scope on a lever... you can decide for yourself if you like the look of it.

Hi there,

I have the H001L, 16" large loop carbine version of the H001 that I bought about 10 years ago. If I shoot it rested, I have no problems getting nickle to quarter sized groups at 50 yards. Should be more than fine for most varmints.

The performance of the rifle depends more upon the ammo, the hold, and trigger handling of the shooter. Please remember that most lever actions have straight grips which require a slightly different hold than a bolt rifle with a pistol grip. If you've never shot a lever gun, you might want to try one first. On the other hand, the trigger of the Henry's surpass that of the Rugers which might be to your advantage.

Hope that helps,

w.w.w.

Thanks guys for the accuracy reports, the reason for a lever is because I wanted a winchester 94 like rifle to practice with so with that fires rounds that do not cost an arm and a leg like 30-30.
Thanks,
Hunter.

I have the Frontier model (octagon barrel) and it's exceptionally accurate. It has nicer stock sights than the regular H001 but even so I should think the standard Henry should be similar.

They're very nice rifles. Enjoy yours.

i had a octogon barrel. i was not happy with the accuracy. i tryed many kinds of ammo. nothing would give me consistant groups. like 3-4 inch 5shots at 50 yrds. it was awsome for up close plinking with irons. verywell biult and the actions are slik as silk. i think i just had a odd gun.

I've been looking at these as well, looking to get a 22lr rifle, great to hear from some who have owned and shot them

Well I am going to pick one up sometime this week and if it's a "keeper" then I might strip the paint off the reciever and barrel band and buff those out then install a nice peep sight(anybody got a suggestion?tang or dovetail both would be fine as long as it does not cost an arm and left nut)
Thanks,
Hunter.

Just picked one up last Monday but got it to the indoor 17 yard range on the way home. Never cleaned it, just made sure the barrel was free of obstruction and with cci blazers it was able to group 10/10 in the bullseye of the visicolor targets.

If you get a Henry you can call them and they will send you the upgraded metal front sites for free??:dancingbanana: Great people to deal with.

stretch

I picked one up today and I must say I love this thing!I have not shot a group with it yet(and yes the sights do suck) but action is sooooo smooth and it feeds lr and shorts perfectly I brought it out and just had some fun plinking with it.mine came withh metal sights with a very wide front sight post and huge notch in the rear sight.so Stretch will they send me upgrades sights from the ones I have?or are these already the upgraded ones?
Thanks,
Hunter.

The Henry's all have metal sights now, and have for the last year or two. The basic model sights are pretty crude though. A nice tang peep is a great addition, but they're generally pretty spendy. Putting a really nice Marbles tang sight and a Lyman globe sight up front will cost you almost as much as the gun.

got it out shooting and got it sighted in with a old 4x power scope I had.I shot about a half an inch group with American eagle 40gr solids bulk pack, then set a beercan (filled with water and no I did not drain it my first I found it,so take a chill pill) at 150 yards,2 shots to figure out my drop and then SPLAT! nailed it first try once I figured out the proper hold over...........I LOVE THIS RIFLE! hahaha most please I have bben with a firearms purchase since my first gun(remington 1100 that despite the seemingly light recoil now, knocked me on my a$$ everytime back then)

just shot one ragged hole 3 shot group with bulk ammo at 30 yards with the crappy iron sights.
Thanks,
Hunter.
P.S. the stripped and buffed receiver and barrel band look AWSOME

did you get the frontier model with the octagon barrel? , or the standard one ? I Have been thinking about getting one sounds like you are happy with yours

mine is just the standard one but I did handle the frontier model and I really liked it, mosty because of the nice sights but it was a little to rich for my budget priced blood.
If you are going to scope it or are willing to work on the sights a bit go with the standard one,but if you are going to use the irons and don't like tinkering then go with the frontier, either way they are an amazing rig and I would be willing to pay twice what I did for mine.
Thanks,
Hunter.

I purchased the 22mag - Varmint henry. Took it to the range and with the first 10 rounds the gun jammed up. The action will no longer close. Took it back where I purchased it and they told me they will replace it for me. That was 2 weeks ago. Aaarrrggggg. I am hoping that when and if I get my replacement it will live up to its reputation as one of the best 22 rifles out there. This waiting is killing me . Oh well off to the range take out some frustrations on some tin cans....
