Me and my friend (CGN'er Achima) are heading to a small gunshow at the Alma High School in Pictou County, NS this weekend.

Any other members planning on attending?

This is the first gunshow I've ever attended so I'm pretty excited to see if I can buy something interesting.

Bring cash. Don't expect a lot of bargains. Set your expectations as 'reasonable'. I find the local (NS and NB) gun shows good places to buy some tools and accessories that would be a lot more expensive if I had to have them shipped in from out of province. Know the rough prices of things you might want to buy before you get there.

Don't get offended if things are a little more pricey 'in person' but remember you're not paying shipping and can walk home with them right then and there.

I've never bought a gun at a gun show but I've bought primers, brass, bullets, powder, shotgun ammo, cases, cleaning materials, tools, ........

I'll be driving by Pictou on Friday night and Saturday but I won't be near the gun show when it is open - too bad.

My first too,I was dissapointed when better buy opened in Dartmouth ,I thought prices would be more reasonable. However I can still get firearms and most ammo, cheaper ,even after shipping!
Hope the show is a bit better! If nothing else I hope to get information about different subjects!

I would reccomend you write down a few models of rifles on paper and a average price before hand check out some of the sponsors above to give you a good price for new. A list of reloading components and the price you would pay for them brand new as well.

Also don't buy the story buy the rifle. Be very very cautious of people selling milsurps with rare marking or 'snipers'. Also keep in mind that the caliber may be hard for you to find to unless you reload

There was a recent thread about a rural gunshow in Ontario where the various respondents went on at some length about high prices, and at greater length about the poor personal hygiene (bad breath and pooty BO) habits practiced by some of the old fudd vendors.:)

I've attended many gunshows across the country over the yrs both as a seller and a buyer and always found that the aroma of gun oil and powder solvent would mostly mask any BO problems that might exist.;) That said, I have a table at our local gunshow this weekend and will shave, shower, shampoo and floss extra carefully in the morning so as not to offend the overly sensitive.

Seriously, shows are a lot of fun and a lot of surprising things ( and people) do turn up. People who are motivated to sell will price things accordingly. As a buyer you always have the opportunity to walk away if you don't like the price. As a seller some pet peeves include guys who neglect to control their kids around the knives and bayonets and folks who drip their Tim Hortons take-out all over the tables. I also like to keep the tables under wraps until the doors are about to open to the public. This avoids a lot of sh*t bidding by other vendors who are in the " Canadian Picker" mode.

Adrian, you may be pleasantly surprised when you get there. This will be one of the bigger shows held in N.S., 165+ tables and several new vendors which have not appeared before at any of the N.S. shows. Should be a good variety.
You just never know what you may find!

Haha, yeah, it's a bit of a drive for Smellie.

Not a problem, I'll take my GF's camera and snap up a bunch of pics and post them.

Just got home. I had a great time. For a small show, there was lots to see.

I met fellow CGN'er Gairlochian whom I just purchased an Enfield headspace gauge from. Great guy; nice to meet you Bert!

Events beyond my control (GF called in my i.o.u. for a new mountain bike yesterday) tightened my budget considerably. I came home with a leather sling for my hunting rifle, a trigger lock, and a nice web sling; 1944 dated with C broad Arrow stamp. I'll put it on my Jungle Carbine until I get my Long Branch. Speaking of which I saw a few. I saw one sportered No.4Mk1* but the bore was shot out. I saw one in original condition but it was mismatched and I didn't like the stock. Also saw a beauty that was out of my price range.

Saw a couple CNo.7's, a couple swede M38's, one SVT-40, a nice Steyr-Mannlicher with some surplus ammo and stripper's to go with it, lots of SMLE sporters, a couple K98's and so on. All kinds of goodies.

Pics to follow...

This is the sling I bought:

you can't tell, but that's a faint 1944 stamp to the left of the C broad Arrow.

Anybody want to tell me the proper way to put this on? Metal clips out to avoid scratching the stock?
Also, I want to clean it. Warm water and a mild soap work okay and not damage it? I'll dry it out good by the wood stove.

Here are some of the firearm pics. Prices were really fair I think.

The swede was $300 (I almost took it home), the polish m44 was $300, the K98 was $700 and the mosin was $150.

It was a hoot, lots of cool stuff, I am not very experienced at pricing but from what I could compare to our EE they were close ,some were crazy and some low but mostly in the ballpark. I observed guys making deals too, so offers were being accepted! Also met a gent that made nice leather good whom I will be contacting soon for knife sheaths and ammo belts.
OH YEA almost forgot ,Peter Mackay was there just shopping around and discussing politics and guns with folks!!
I looked at an enfield .38 1942 in good shape ,the guy wanted $250. should have offered $200 but proud of myself for holding off, I want something in .455!

Thanks for the great pics!

Good thing I wasn't there; pension cheque only goes so far and it would have been beans and rice for the next YEAR!

Lotsa neat things just begging for new homes......
.

Nice pics!! If I was there and the bore was good on that Polish M44, I would have swept her up awfully fast, for 300 it seems like a pretty good deal. There never seems to be any gunshows where I'm located, I guess things will probably change with time. Cheers.
