Hey everyone, just a little interesting picture for you.

A friend of mine purchased a Springfield M1A awhile back. He's fired it numerous times without issue. He was cleaning his rifle today and suddenly, this.



It literally just snapped off, with no forcing or anything. This just blew my mind. This is the reason why I'll never own a Springfield.

Sorry about your friends luck. They should fix it for him, even if it's not under warranty the part shouldn't break the bank. The good part is no damage to anything other than the op rod.
 
Hey, ease up on the M1A Fanboys! I own BOTH Norc and M1A rifles! :D And right now my M1A rocks a Norc op rod. Enough said!

Lesson learned, never hurts to keep a spare op rod around! I used to keep a USGI in my shooting stool at NRA High Power matches!

Would be interesting to see that fracture zone clearly. Is it porous??

No picture available, but I'll ask when he get's back later. He used the term "pot metal" to describe the inside of the metal though.

No, you can't say the same about Norcs either, and I wasn't saying that Norcs are better in any way, shape, or form. But who gives a hoot about a lifetime warranty if that hunk of charging handle was embedded into my friend's head instead?
 
springfield's been around a long time. not like them to build ####e. Mistakes happen with every company. air bubbles in the metalurgy process....
 
WOW ... ouch ... these are battle rifles that shoot alot of bullets ... some in the grain they're designed for, others in heavier bullets as some folks just wanna shoot. Glad he didn't get hurt! I'm sure there are defects in any model made! ;)

p.s. I think it's sad this whole NORC vs Springfield BS ... all models will eventually break with lots of use and/or improper care! ;) (not saying your buddy didn't take care of his shizznat either)
 
That happened to me too.

It was quite a while ago when the op rod did snap. Just contact the store you purchased it from or the distributor, and Springfield will send you a new one. They are guaranteed for life. Good Luck!
