Does anyone even shoot 6.8 SPC

I had a Rock River Arms 6.8 SPC AR 15 upper on order for some time. I eventually cancelled the order because it was taking too long to get here and I'm just that impatient.

While it was on order, I was quite interested in the caliber in the AR platform. The thing is, no one I talked to in Canada seemed to have any interest or related knowledge.

I'm just wondering, does anyone around here own an AR15 in 6.8 SPC? Is it particularly hard to come by Ammo? I've only ran into a couple of suppliers that carry more than a few boxes of one or two types. Usually special order.

I suppose it's possible that it's just not popular here because its an intermediate caliber with rather expensive ammo, and we can't hunt with our ARs so no one can justify the expense.

Yes; it's not readily available locally, but a few CGN sponsors do carry it (and it is expensive compared to .223). Otherwise you pretty much summed it up. For me, it was an intermediate caliber between .223 and .308, and I can still run 10-round magazines on my AR with it - so really, what's not to like? (except perhaps the price) Still, it's comparable to 5.7mm or similarly uncommon calibers.
 
I have one and like it. It's an LMT 16 inch MPR. Don't shoot it as much as I would like due to ammo costs but I don't plan on selling it any time soon either.
 
I also waited 3 months for an upper in 6.8spc just to be told that I might have to wait till the cows come home. I did buy the dies to reload to keep the cost down and did find some once fired(30) at pro-line which I promply bought up. I guess I will just have to get my hands on a BCG and start my build from there. Was that an A2 upper that you cancelled on at questar? Cause I was offered on in liew of the flat top mid lenth I orderd but then was told I couldn't get that either. One way or another I will have a 6.8 I just wish I didn't waste 3 months waiting.
 
I have a Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8SPC it is a fantastic low recoil hunting combo especially when loaded with 95gr Barnes TTSX I load mine to 2825fps with H322 powder.

H322, RL10 powders are probably used more than any other powder until recently AA2200 is giving faster velocities with the same pressures and accuracy is fantastic.

Imagine marrying two of the most popular hunting cartridges around a 30-30 Win case shortened slightly and necked down to 270 cal and you have a rimmed 6.8SPC.

These rounds are so close to a 30-30 that I can get my T/C Contender carbine 6.8SPC barrel/chamber counterbored and use 30-30 brass I would be able to switch back and forth from rimmed to rimless6.8SPC rounds without an issue.

I probably wouldn't buy an AR in 6.8spc that I could only take to the range but that is why I do not own an AR I have no use for a rifle that I can only take to the range.

Yeah, That's what I had on order. It's not the fault of Questar. Just takes ages for RRA to ship anything destined for Canada I guess.

Thanks. I've lost interest, but I appreciate the thought.

Now that 6.5 Grendel has been submitted to sammi and a couple of companies promise to make cheap-ish plinking ammo as well as high performance rounds, I think I'll wait for gun manufacturers to hop on that bandwagon and just get one of those.

Would be awesome if Robinson arms made an XCR in 6.5

Just my thoughts. Please don't make this a caliber war.
 
I don't think if I would go for a 6.5 over the 6.8 but I am into hunting and the difference between the two rounds at practical hunting distances = 300 - 350 yards even when you are comparing 140gr Bergers neither has any real benefits over the other at the distances I hunt.
 
Why 6.8 when you could go 300blackout. You just swap the barrel. You can buy ammo or brass for a better price. You don't have to use the craptastic 6.8 mags. You have endless bullet selection and you have full effectiveness with a 9" barrel on an ar or bolt rifle platform. Did I mention the fact that it also out preforms 6.8 at 400yrds

What he said.

Build a 9" AR for fun at the range and use the same ammo to hunt with out of a 9" bolt gun. Doesn't get much better then that.

Your going to have to show ballistics on this before I will believe...
 
The 6.8spc is being loaded with Berger 140gr .483 BC hunting bullets I'd like to see how a 30 cal with a much smaller powder capacity can produce better ballistics for long range shooting.

it all comes down to ballistic coefficient. I do believe sierra claims the 220gr has a 0.604 BC at subsonic velocities....

Now that being said....
solovan must have been speaking about 124 -130 gr bullets in the blk

What i'm seeing from strelok is this:
a 6.8 with remington open tip match 115gr traveling 2450 with a 200 yard zero = 34.57 inches of drop.

meanwhile a subsonic, sierra, traveling 1050 with a 200 yard zero drops 151.3 inches...
 
"out perform" is rather subjective, at muzzle in a short 9" barrel 300 Blackout has bit more energy but less velocity, but when you compare with a 16" that advantage quickly disappears. so after traveling couple of hundred metre down range that gap become quit significant.

I've been trying to offload some 6.8 SPC ammo in the EE. Seems to be zero interest. The number and nature of replies to this thread would appear to explain why. Very few shooting it.
