So yeah, I have read the everlong debate on using 40 S&W in your 10mm barrel.

Anyways- can it go the other way around- can 10mm be used in a 40 S&W barrel?

Now I don't mean to, nor do I encourage people using the improper ammo in the wrong chambering, but what I mean is in the following situation.

You're at the range- shooting your favourite 40 S&W, and you run out of ammo. Oh no! A guy down the line offers some 10mm for you to use. Do you use it?

Come on, google is your friend.

They don't interchange, either direction. The exception would be in a revolver using moon clips, like a Smith & Wesson 610.

10mm Auto is significantly longer than 40S&W, and both cartridges headspace on the case mouth, so you couldn't get the slide into battery. It would be similar to trying to chamber 30-06 in a .308.

Kinda figured. Just wanted to confirm, since I didn't see anything about 10mm in 40 S&W, just 40 S&W in 10mm.

9mm will shoot out of a 10mm, but the bullets just tumble.... Didn't happen to me, but I was ROing the guy who did do it! Kinda went like this:

Bang...

huh, gun won't work. Tap mag, Rack slide.

Bang...

Huh, gun won't work. Rack slide.

Bang...

Huh, gun won't work. Drop mag, Huh, this is 9mm....

The guy who did it was using someone else's gun. Somone moved the 10mm ammo he had been using and there was 9mm ammo in the same spot. He didn't pay attention when he was loading the mags andjust grabbed the ammo from the spot it had been. He is a very expereinced shooter too, so that made it even funnier!

The bullets are the same.....different cases and overall length.
It would be nice if hornady 10mm or even .40 cartridges were $22.95 per 100.

.40 will shoot out of nearly all 10mms with no adjustment. Not what I would consider safe but it does work and reliably as well. There are a few videos floating around.

Even though it headspaces on the case mouth?

What holds it in place to get reliable ignition, friction against the chamber walls?

As its stripped from the mag, it slides up the breech face, while the extractor engages the casing, holding it firmly(ish) in place.

The link I posted two posts above this, the guy was finding that the .40 was headspacing on the front of the chamber (having got there by inertia maybe?), but the firing pin went forward far enough to set it off...

That's a lot of firing pin protrusion given the 3.6mm difference in case length.

Some guns (most notably revolvers) can accept multiple calibres of rounds but this will be clearly stamp on the gun. If the headstamp on the cartridge doesn't match the stamp on your gun don't shoot it. And especially don't shoot it around me
