$1,000 modern hunting rife: help me find one

So thats my budget, I'm just taking hunters ed and want to get acquainted with a good gun for the job. Its gonna be shot at the range mostly as I want to throw a scope on this thing and work on my shooting. Gonna go 30-06 cause I reload and can take advantage of the heavier bullets. throwing a scope on it


1. wood/blued- Dont just want function, also dont want to spend 3 grand on a piece. Just a nice, working mans rifle that I can perhaps pass on some day.

2. accurate enough to have fun with at the range. I dont really like guns unless theyre accurate, and I know my shot out enfield will prolly still hit vitals on a deer from 100 yards but I want a shooter.

3. Not too heavy/light. Too light=painful to shoot. though I heard from a guy that light guns + light people(me) means we just move with the recoil. not sure myself.

Im thinking cz 550(american), new Winchester model 70, Browning X bolt, Weatherby vanguard S 2.

opinions welcome, especially if you own one of these!

I have a Thompson Icon in 30-06 blued steel and wood stock.
Very nice rifle for the price and very accurate.

How about a CZ 527 Carbine ?

Yeah its in 7.62x39 - BUT, for most hunting that will do fine Cool looking, light++, has a magazine.

They are gaining LOTS of followers in europe - I'd love one for fun. Ammo is cheap too !

I would pick Browning and then Winchester.

quoted for truth. I had a similar conedrum this winter in that i wanted a wood and blued bolt gun in '06 for that price range. i looked at a lot of guns and fell in love with the 70. I ended up getting a used 7600 in 270 because im compulsive and like shiny things i see in guns stores but thats a whole nother issue

Sako A7, comes with Burris FFII 3-9x40 scope.
Next choice would be a Tikka T3 Hunter (wood).
I am not a Browning fan but Browning, Winchester m70, Remington .

After that, if you want to save $$$, buy a Savage Axis pkg deal...if you can get past the sloppy action......great shooters thou.

Get the Featherweight, you don't want heavy, you don't want light. The Featherweight is neither, plus it has to be one of the nicest wood stocks around. It is a true classic in every sense, what's not to like.

I like the new Winchester model 70. Featherweight, standard grade or for a bit more splurge on a Super-Grade.

First choice Winchester, second Browning A bolt. Put a Redfield 4-12 on it and you're right in the $1000.00 mark, least that's what I'd do.

You mentioned some good ones, I'd also consider Tikka. Pick the one that feels the best to you when you hold it in your hands would be my best advice.

For quality, affordability, and accuracy all bottled into one, Tikka would be my first, Win. 70 would be second. Whatever you buy, practice makes perfect!

This is going to seem iconoclastic, but...

...I'd go to Tradex and look seriously for a 30-06 Husqvarna. Even if you need stock work and a reblue (which you likely won't), you'll come out with twice the quality for the same price.

If you find a nice one, you'll have 500 dollars for decent optics.
