I was hoping to get some insight on the most lightweight/reasonably priced stocks for the M305. The 2 things I'm concerned about most is it has to be the pistol grip, and I'd like as little fitment issues and tinkering as possible.

I would check out m-14 doctors stocks not sure on weight. Them14.ca stocks look great as well but again not sure on the weight but I'm willing to bet they would be slightly heavier than the docs. The vltor mod stock would probably be the lightest pistol gripped stock but the design seems kind of flimsy to me.

You can get a Boyd's wooden stock if you want your pistol grip to be thicker. There's a USGI fibreglass stock that's about $125-$175

The Troy chassis run about $1200 and there were the Marstar AKM stocks for $900 I believe.

The M14 doc composite stocks are really good, and priced at around $500 I believe. Recently the m14.ca guys brought out a chassis that runs about $600

I have personally found the USGI fibreglass stocks to be a great addition. My rifle saw an increase in accuracy over the Norinco squishy wood, and the grip area was thinner which really helped because I have small hands, kind of like asian woman.

Lol. Well I've been looking at the M14 docs CQB stock. It seems to be more my price range, but I really like the look of the Marstar AKM

I'm also wondering what my chances are of finding a used marstar AKM, sage ebr, or troy SOPMOD stock? I'm gonna just go ahead and guess slim to none?

They all come up from time to time ... and range from anywhere $600-$1000 depending on condition ... I have a never used McMillan pistol grip stock & handguard I'm considering selling pictured below.

I would say contact M14Doctor as he might have something that would fit your bill. As I know a few years back he was doing USGI moded stocks for a reasonable price.

Thanks a lot everyone! I'm new to the gunnutz family and am immpressed on how helpful everyone is. Great forum. Thanks again!

Weight of stocks for M14 and M1A

I have weighted different M1A and M14 stock options with the following results:

GI - Fiberglass 2lbs 12 oz's (44 oz's)

Plastic Norinco of 2012 CANAM Shorty 3 lbs 2 oz's (50 oz's)

Boyds M1A Walnut 2 lbs 14 oz's (46 oz's)

GI Birch 2 lbs 7 oz's (39 oz's)

GI Butt plate 7 oz's

Norinco Butt plate 9 oz's

The difference in the butt plate weights is because of different metals used i.e Aluminum and Steel, since the GI butt plate is Aluminum with a steel trap door and steel shoulder support, were as the Norinco is all steel. Also the Birch Stock is old and I am sure has a very low moisture content. The plastic Norinco stock has very sharp edges which do not make it very desirable to carry compared with the other stocks. The Boyds stock actually weighs the same as the GI Fiberglass stock since it had a Norinco Butt plate when I weighted it which is heavier than the GI Butt plate on the fiberglass stock. I have found swapping the GI butt plate with the Norinco one on the Boyd stock makes it balance better and easier to carry even though the weight difference is only two ounces.

I'm also looking to get a new stock for my rifle. I want the classic wood look and would like to get a Boyd's walnut piece. Is there anywhere in Canada that sells these?.......Finished or unfinished is just fine with me......Email me if you know where?
