what is the Black Badge course??

So,.how does IPSC Canada assess who is competent and who is not?
ie:
"I'm Johnny shooter,..I am competent and should not have to take this course. I practice every week. I also know the rules, and read the book already".

Awesome that you enjoyed it and passed.
Others may need more work. Something to keep in mind.

How many matches have you shot so far....and do you enjoy it?

same way they asses who is safe at every match already, you do something unsafe then you get a DQ, the end. Do something not allowed in the rule book because you didnt read it? same way they punish you if you have read the rule book, move you to open or point/time penalties

do all USPSA matches go to hell in a hand basket because they have no mandatory course to make sure everyone knows the rules? nope they trust people to be responsible and punish them if they arent. I know its novel in this day and age, but people dont need hand holding. somewhere in the course of getting the gun, getting the mags/holster/other gear and getting to a match people will have heard that their are rules and can decide if they need the course or not.

think about your drivers licence or even your gun licence, do you HAVE to take a course to make sure you are safe/know the laws? no they have tests for it and you decided if you want to take a course or not to learn them. each IPSC match is that test, prepare for it how you will and suffer the consequences.

would i have had fun at the course if lots of people who knew nothing were in it? nope i would have been pissed but i got lucky. would i rather have the 2500 rounds that it cost me to take the course? without a doubt.

havent shot any ipsc matches yet because im concentrating on steel challenge but shot 3 years of IDPA and was an IDPA SO, but that isnt very big out here thus going to shoot IPSC

then you should not have a Black badge certificate. It is mandatory that you complete a sanctioned IPSC match in order to have successfully completed the course. Idpa seem like fun. I have only shot a few CDP matches though. ...but I have shot IPSC matches since 2004. At least you are having fun. Steel challenge looks like great fun.

Do you get an actual "badge" to sew on your range gear signifying that
you've passed the course, or a small certificate?

Oh yes, it comes with a real "Badge" and a Ham radio licence to boot. This let's you walk around with a holster and a walkie Talkie on your belt at the same time.

i said i did the course, ill get around to a match when a weekend works out for me. the person running ipsc at my club has been slacking with the whole "organizing a match" thing

and as you pointed out, you dont get the certificate till you shoot a match and dont get DQ'd, why do i need a course to do a match and not get DQ if im confident in my ability to read a rule book and handle a firearm? if i do get DQ'd its not like i cant show up to the next match and try again.

2500 rounds to get through a BB course? Really?
I did mine in 1994, total count under 1000. I helped with another course and most got through under 1000, the couple that had some trouble might have approached 2000. Have the courses changed that much to require 2500 rounds or did you struggle some to pass?

because we have nothing to prove to you. YOu,..on the other hand, have not demonstrated in an IPSC match that you can control your movements, gun handling, etc...and do so safely IN A MATCH. THe onus is on you,..the applicant. The volunteers who teach the BB course want you to succeed; but you have to demonstrate as such in a match....plain and simple. Those are the RULES. Every other applicant had to,..so why not you? You should Talk to your BB instructor.

Thats bull####, completion of the course allows you to compete in your first match, you get the first match paid for. Weather you compete or not has nothing to do with if you passed the course. If i didnt pass the course i would not be allowed to compete period. However, if you dont compete with in two years of taking the course, then you will have to take the course again before you can compete.

even 1k is ridiculous - both my boys went thru when they were 13 and did the whole thing in under 700 each. what are you guys doing that we're not here in the north???

no sorry, wasnt 2500 rounds to do the course, it was like 600 rounds or something, the 2500 is $250 course cost converted into ammo

yea, i have to be safe at the match, thats a given. My point was why do i HAVE to take a course to be allowed to even shoot a match? none of my other examples force you to take a course, they just let you challenge the test and let you prepare however suits you best (the test in this case is the IPSC match)

and ok i shoot my match and dont get DQ, now i get my black badge cert and... what changes? do i get to do something at matches I couldnt do before? nope its exactly the same as if im still on probation or whatever, still get penalized the same, DQ'd the same, scored the same ect.

I was given a card that says i have successfully completed the minimum training and may now compete a novice qualification match. I got a plastic card from IPSC for that year as well.

Black badge means I can be a Ninja in the daytime to. All papers that would likely mean nothing in the real warfare environment, but heh if you get giggles out of it rock on.

I like the Internet one...LOL

Wow, just wow... Maurice, you must have the patients of a saint! Perhaps if someone other than you explains it they may beleive it?

What is a Black Badge course?

The course teaches how to move forward, backward side to side with a loaded gun. It teaches you to draw and holster a gun safely as well as reload safely. It trains you to keep your muzzle downrange at all times. it teaches you not only the rules of IPSC, but the game of IPSC. IE when to reload, proper grip how stages can be solved in differnt ways etc etc.

As maurice previousely stated I've never heard anyone say it was a waste of time. You get exceptional training provided by highly experienced and knowlegable instructors.

The course generally only calls for 500 rounds of ammo. In certain cases more is required, but generally far less.

Part of the Black Badge course is shooting an IPSC sanctioned match. DOn't think of it as two seperate things, they are 1 whole entitiy.

You take the course and get a little card that says you've completed the training. That card must be presented to the stats crew when getting your competitor number and registering. At this point you do not have a BB. The card lets you shoot 1 match without a BB. Shooting the match with no DQ then means you've finished the BB course and you have your BB. You should then receive your BB certifiate and pin.

Any other questions? I swear guys, I don't know Maurice, but every word he's said so far is true. And GunGuy, talk to SpideySteve, you're both Fort Mac guys and Steve shoots IPSC alot. He probably knows even more than I do! I don't want to sound like an a**hole, but you are very wrong on many things.

thanks for the kind words. I know SpideySteve as he is a Tanfoglio shooter and have talked to him via different forums. I hope he can get thru to this guy. The last BB course at Fort McMurray was back in April I believe. Does not look like any matches have been held at that range lately although on the ALberta Calender it lists a match on May26th/27th.

What we do locally is have a match after the course if everyone is game and the course is running on good time. It makes for a later finish time, but I feel it is worth setting up the stages to get my applicants thru the course, match and certified.

Generally we have a "mini match" on the afternoon of the second day and experienced shooters come shoot with the newbies. This isn't a sactioned match though, so it doesn't give them a BB, but it does prepare them for what a real match would be like.

All the AB matches are scheduled a year at a time and it's IPSC AB that schedules it. There is however at least 1 match per month in AB somewhere. Provincials near calgary are coming up july long weekend then 2 qualifiers back to back on a sat and sunday near the end of July. It's always fun and anyone who want more IPSC info is welcome to come out at watch and ask questions! IPSC people are generally friendly! We want people to join our sport.

Absolutely! I know Walter Hornby (IPSC Alberta website admin/ instructor) well as we are both distributors for Canadian BDX. He and Cathy are tireless in there work in Alberta. 2008 Nationals out there in Lethbridge was awesome:cheers:

Lol yup Walter as well as the rest of the awesome Lethbridge IPSC crew taught me most of what I know. I'm lucky to have such experienced and awesome shooters to laugh at me when I screw up and teach me how to not do it again! lol
